Problems with spring onions

For many years we grew spring onions without a problem . Grew in succession and even had onions to pick over winter. Now we even have problem germinating the seed. We have tried sowing direct, in trenches of multi-purpose compost, in modules, in pots, in tubs, Different varieties of seeds have been ...

Re: Insect Bites

After a little research it turned out that Avon "Skin-So-Soft" keeps midges at bay. "Skin-So-Soft" comes in two products. A cream and an oil, Avon changed whatever it was that kept midge at bay in the cream which was a bit of a shame because it wasn't very greasy. Last year we b...

Re: Agricultural question.

Re: Insect Bites

Me too.

When I go to the plot I have been spraying myself and it's kept things at bay but I haven't bothered when I have been in the garden and the things seem to have got me then.

I would have imagined human waste of every kind was a bigger problem than horse dung.

Re: TV programmes

Some of the seven year olds at our local schools have a far better vocabulary of swear words than the cast of East-enders...and use them! If we mentioned bad language at parents' evenings we would often get remarks such as I can't understand where he/she ?@### well gets it from. It must be the /$$#...

Some of the whites unlike for instance the painted lady are resident in the UK too. The migrating insects just really add to the number so we don't get a 'free' period up here. :(

When I was a primary teacher I was appalled to over hear seven years olds at the lunch table discussing who they thought had got someone pregnant in East Enders.

Growing potatoes through weed control fabric.

We have used weed control fabric extensively on our plot this year and it has been very successful. We've used a variety of ways of planting through the fabric suited to different crops - for instance cutting long slits folded back into which to sow seeds and cross slits to plant transplants through...

Re: TV programmes

My pet tv hates? The programmes that skip between several "threads" throughout the episode and do a recap of each thread every time they rejoin it, rather than follow one thread to its conclusion and then start a new one. Net result, of a half hour programme, five minutes for introduction...

I never net blackcurrants or gooseberries I am happy to share with the birds as they leave plenty for me but do net redcurrants and cherries as the birds will strip these given half a chance. I need to try netting blueberries too as there is never any left for me.
