Re: dig or no dig

Our garden is very heavy clay about 0.5metres below the surface. I've adopted a no dig policy for the past 20 years...but only used home compost to "lighten" the soil. I use the commas round "lighten" advisedly. Our topsail is quite heavy, cracks in dry summers and if you sieve i...

Re: You just never know about the provenance of the food you buy

The Romans proved that despite lead poisoning from water pipes and drinking cups, it makes little difference until you're so old you die of something else anyway. (In the case of the Romans, probably cirrhosis of the liver... oops that sounds like us). Of course if you drink water deliberately conta...

John Walker

Thanks for that.

I note it does not refute my basic point which is that the Earth has been warming for the past 20,000 years and the biggest and fastest change happened before man started burning fossil fuels...

and there is a detailed rebuttal of John Cook's points: here.

Re: Global warming -How Gardens might change in the Future.

I have a copy of a newspaper article written in the early 1970s telling me a new Ice Age was imminent. And of course the Met Office - which forecasts Britain's weather in detail for both the short (days), medium (6 months) and long (100 years) term - has a 100% track record in its medium term foreca...

Re: Don't say "organic" say "sustainable"

The challenges farming now faces are the increasing scarcity and price of oil and the need to cut greenhouse gases emissions by 80% before 2050. Rather than burning up oil and gas for the agrochemicals on which GM crops are reliant, the future of food production lies in systems that fertilise crops...

Richard I have that thinning problem too. I believe the solution is called a "hat". They work well in keeping your solar panel dry - and warm. I have three baseball ones - one ex Aldi with LEDs in it - great for night putting turkeys to bed - and one waterproof one. Plus two knitted ones f...

Re: Rudolf Steiner

. Does it matter that those who garden biodynamically might feel affronted when told that what they do is claptrap? If they feel affronted, they should grow up and have the courage of their beliefs. Being precious is something you cannot afford when you are viewed as eccentic or an outsider.. And if...

Hmm
I just plant when the weather/season is right and have done so for 30 years. As I have had no notable disasters , I must have been lucky.

But then I'm a Libran.

What a load of carp.

Re: Do you consider yourself to be environmentally conscious?

Do you consider yourself to be environmentally conscious? Yes. If so, does this affect how you garden? In what ways? I try to garden without artificial fertilizers and only use soap as a pesticide. Recycle everything, make compost .. but regretfully have to buy my own seed compost as I'm no good at...

Sally you can grow most flowers if you do not use the double forms That is what I have read. Having said that I grow lots and LOTS of opium poppies in our garden.. approx 1 metre tall. Bees love them, indeed they like them so much it is not uncommon to see 5 or 6 bees inside the same flower. We have...
