disorder in the hen house

Since some of my hens started to moult there seems to be a lot more strife than before. Previously they seemed to rub along quite happily with just the odd tiff, but now war seems to have broken out with quite long lasting scuffles. Some hens are mounting others as if they are cockerels. Is this som...

ho hum

it's entirely academic now as they have blight, so have cut off the tops to save the crop.

DIY plastics (web address something like diyplastic.com) sell film to stick on existing glass to stop it shattering on impact. Maybe this is an option?

chilli tips

1) use surgical gloves when handling, that way you CAN rub your eyes, nose, etc without dire consequences

2) if you eat a chilli that is too hot, drink milk, it calms things down much faster than water

Pink Fir Apples

I've heard a lot of advice recently to cut the tops off maincrop spuds that are still growing, to get the harvest before the slugs do. I have a bed of Pink Fir Apple with fantastic foliage that it seems a shame to cut down as it took such a check in the heatwave. I've not suffered much from slug dam...

Thanks for the help. I'm not that bothered about the aubergines, but I'm very worried about my bumper crop of cucumbers that are currently paying the rent! I assume the little blighters will attack them too - if I raise the humidity could that stop the attack or is it too late?

more on aubergines

Mine haven't fruited, but they are now dying. First the leaves go a mottled green and a bit limp, then they go brown and papery. If I didn't know better I'd think someone had attacked them with a flame weeder. I don't think it is spider mite as I can't see any sign of life. Does anyone have any ideas?

Bertolini Two Wheeled Tractor

I have the chance to buy one of these - does anyone know if it is still possible to get extra attachments to go on the PTO, or if another make will go on too.

most metals will do

I have stripped old electric flex and used the copper round individual plants and is has worked. However all metals have the small electrical charge the slugs dislike, although copper is the better conductor. I had great success growing hostas in old galvanised buckets, although I did spend a lot of...

organic solution...

If you are determined to be organic (and glyphostae is not as safe for the user as the manufacturers would have you believe), and you aren't going to use the ground til next year I would recommend clearing the worst of the overgrowth (ie any brambles, trees etc), strim the rest and leave it where it...

yellow courgettes

I am growing yellow courgettes variety Soleil. They are still in pots at the moment and have all developed yellow leaves. I think it is a mineral deficiency, but the green courgettes and squashes I am growing have no sign of it. Does anyone know why this variety seems to be struggling while the othe...

an allotment I used to have had a table by the noticeboard at this time of year where you could put surplus plants, and do swapsies. It worked very well, especially if you put stuff there on a friday evening - by sunday they were all gone to good homes. The most important thing was to label everythi...
