Dear Di, there are plenty of gardens to visit in NY. My personal favourites are Benningborough hall near York and Studley Royal/Fountains Abbey both are NT. These are also magnificent gardens but are still in private hands so they will cost you but I feel they will be well worth it as they are garde...

Dear Pongeroon,
1cms netting is perfectly adequate for keeping the caterpillars off. Just remember to have a wider netting available for the top in winter. Just in case we actually get any snow...

Dear Mike, yes you can, carefully cut off the flower head underneath itself just where it joins it's stem, if you cut any lower it leaves a hollow tube which will become waterlogged and spoil the onion. When the bulb had formed you will need to use them first and remove the chewy flower stalk before...

Moles seeds do asparagus crowns, they work out at about 50p each if you get 50. The catalogue is at work so I cannot be more exact.

Dear Penny, if you want the willow canes to go into the ground and not grow the best way is to dunk them in a bucket of boiling water. Leave until cold and then use. The depth of the bucket or container must be deeper than the planned depth you will put the canes into the ground. Regards Sally Wright.

Dear Sue, T&M are usually the most expensive company to buy pots from and you are definitley paying for the name. Contact a local allotment soc and see if they have a seed potato ordering scheme. Ours generally has 3kg sacks for about £2.60 or less (depending on variety). Regards Sally Wright.

Dear Berloiz
Try looking on American websites for something I think is called a corn borer. I can't be any more specific than that but I think it is a major pest in the US.

Dear Skip, the bigger the cloves you plant the better the resulting bulbs. The only downside with this method is lots of tiddlers in the kitchen does not the cook a happy bunny make. So combine the planting with a batch of pesto making and freeze the result. Regards Sally Wright. ps for freezing use...

Dear Di, I always over order on the spuds as I can then plant the biggest and palm the rest off onto my fellow allotment holders. Most seem pleased to get them and would probably not buy a whole sack anyway. Or you can swap your surplus ones for a different variety that you want to try. As for the o...
