The general opinion is that worms do not like ammonia, so stick tothe heap :!:

Um, I thought it was acid they didn't like?
And don't compost worms live in piles of horse poo? Isn't that full of horse wee too?
I'm really confused now :(

warm trousers

given I'm likely to be spending a goodly amount of time in the cold (brrrrr) I could do with some recommendations on warm clothing! I rather like the idea of moleskin troosers - I think jeans might be too unwieldy, and they're grim if they get wet! At home I tend to wear several layers, so that I ca...

Hi Peter Thanks for the suggestion, I'll certainly take a look at it. I note that Midgely's book was written some while ago. I do wonder whether there are certain principles which hold true over the years, and how much we need to take into consideration currents trends and fashions when considering ...

thanks for the Sparsholt suggestion! took a look at their website, they've got a lot to offer! The Asst. Est Mgr's father has poured scorned and cold water on my plan, which has knocked my confidence a little. Mama thinks it's the best idea I've had in years. But then she IS a mad old bat, so who to...

garden design courses

hello chaps OK, so I'm signed up to study the RHS certificate at night school now, but I also want to study garden design specifically. I've had a mooch about on t'internet and had to have a lie down in a darkened room with a damp flannel on my head. Did ya know you can spend 7k on a course at the C...

Ah well, no magnolias for me :(

gosh no, I'm not at all offended! I'm really delighted with all the comments and warnings. I believe in planning (heck I even created a project plan for doing up the Asst. Est. Mgr's kitchen!) and I want to be properly prepared for this major change in my life. I'm going to take cuttings etc from ev...

Hi JB I agree entirely! I'm just in the process of getting the details of the RHS certificate which is run at Newbury College on an evening. Interesting comments about growing my own plants - I've actually just agreed a deal with a local nursery to buy 100 Gardener's Delight organically grown tomato...

I'd like to thank every one of you for your help and advice. I'm very moved at the generosity of you all!
I've decided - I'm going to do it. I'm going to start small and see where it takes me.
Now. At what point do I get business cards etc?

Neil, I've taken your advice and ripped open my teabags, and I'm delighted to report that my babies have actually started to eat the food scraps I've also managed to secure some more worms courtesy of a lady on Freecycle (what a great concept that is!) so my population will be swelled considerably t...

Tigger, I meant no offence by my observations, my experience as a Theatre nurse was such that we were definitely made to feel like lackeys! I found this to be even more pronounced in the private sector. I worked in the NHS for a total of 14 years, in both clinical and non clinical roles, and left on...

A career in Horticulture

Morning all I'm fed up to the back teeth and beyond with working in a corporate bear pit, for numpty idiot managers and with work shy oiks. I've been interested in gardening for many years and I've decided that spiritual well being is more important than having a new car every couple of years. I'd l...

Wasn't it Ms Lumley who famously demonstrated how to get out of a sports car without showing one's underwear? hmmm, Ms Spears could learn a thing or two from her! Interestingly Ms Lumley is on the cover of Good Housekeeping (heavens I'm soooooo old!) and inside there is an article on her. Poor old ...
