Can anybody explain why spaces between rows are usually bigger than the space between plants.
Example:
"Plant shallot sets 25cm (10in) apart in rows 40cm (16in) apart from mid-November to mid-March."

Plant suggestions
I have a 7 metre long south facing fence at back of the plot with a ditch behind it.
I would like to grow something that is beneficial/attracts wild life birds/bees/butterflies, grows quick and has bit of bulk to keep wind at bay.
Thinking buddleia and comfrey, anything else I can add?

Re: Soil Testing
At the beginning I brought one of those 2 pronged gauges for testing soil/temp, but after reading about no dig came to the conclusion that testing soil not a bit issue. No problem growing brassicas or any other veg in first year. This is second sowing of brassicas only issue I had at first was soil ...

"I am trying Charles Dowding's no dig method. I was planning on covering the last weedy part of my allotment with horse muck (I can get plenty of not fresh but not fully rotted muck), covering this with a layer of cardboard and leaving it until the spring when I will start growing in it. Is thi...

Re: Insulating compost bin
Another thought on pallet verses darlek.
There are gaps in pallets but not in the darlek as compost needs air could this be reason darlek does not get hot.

Re: Insulating compost bin
What about lining the inside with cardboard?
Since moving to pallet type compost bins the temp has been around 60/70 active/hot where as the darlek type got hot for a few days then dropped off.

Re: cheese
When I get down to the parmesan rind I slice as much off and share it with the dog when I cannot get any more cheese off it I give it to the the dog.
Many a time I have taken cheese out of fridge to find it has gone green, still eat it though.

Spent a lovely day on the plot enjoying the sunshine whilst putting up new gate posts and getting stung by red ants.
