Re: Fresh lawn clipping as mulch

I bought glyphosate from Elixer for a lot cheaper than I could get it from our farmers co-op and the co-op wanted a holding number from me. A few businesses are slow to catch up with internet buying, sort of like, head-in-the-sand attitude and maybe their main customer base just isn't wired to the i...

Re: Fresh lawn clipping as mulch

I have been buying from Elixer garden supplies, they do quite a varied range of fertilizers at about that price. Stronger ones are more expensive. The " Pro-Grower" I bought recently was just over £23 for 25 kilos delivered. I did do some research on pricing but found mostly the same price...

Re: Fresh lawn clipping as mulch

It took me two seasons too get the right application rate for the domestic grasses fertilizer going through one of those roller-applicator thingies, you can get it badly wrong easily and end up with tram lines of over-or-under fertilized grass or kill the lot off so I'm nervous. With the bone meal I...

Re: Fresh lawn clipping as mulch

I prefer nice tender brassicas rather than the coarse tough things that high nitrogen produces. That is very interesting, I didn't know that. And yes, I used to just throw nutrient onto the soil in random amounts which if you knew me you would find odd because I am obsessive. Right now I have digit...

Re: Fresh lawn clipping as mulch

Thanks Geoff. I could have used Growmore I suppose, I already have a stock of Growmore. I only buy 15 or 20 kilo sacks, it's a lot cheaper than small quantities and delivery is free. The application rates for covered/uncovered are 30 and 50 grams per square metre for the stuff I just bought. I also ...

Re: Fresh lawn clipping as mulch

I just received the granular fertilizer I referred to in an earlier post, the recommended application for potatoes is 100 grams per square meter. That's twice the application for vegetables and flowers and outdoor application is heavier that if you grow under cover. I didn't know that, told you, I'm...

Re: Fresh lawn clipping as mulch

I do what I think you are doing Chris, it's always better if the clippings can dry though if I have to many for the compost then first I pile them under bushes or other places where I need weed control. Also, if I'm assured the grass cuttings will dry quickly I place them anywhere I can dig them in....

Re: Controversial diet matters.

I have the sea north, south and west of me. I planted mixed hedging a few weeks back and whilst it's doing well a lot of the new leaves are black around the edges, I'm told it's the salty air. Mostly this mixed hedging does ok around here but it's the sea buckthorn hedge that really does well though...

Re: Controversial diet matters.

I love you're little Mouse, so we have Mouse and mouse2. Nice. I see your point, I'm on the obsessive side of balanced behaviour and seemed to have spent my 75 years being crap or middle of the road at everything I did though don't think I'm lacking confidence or depressive. I just dislike failure a...

Re: Controversial diet matters.

I had to assume the comfrey leaf mulch was responsible for the strawberry plants foliage going brown and withering though most plants recovered this year. Are you suggesting it wasn't the mulch of leaves ? When it comes to comfrey tea I made it in a dustbin filled with water and an onion sack full o...

Re: Controversial diet matters.

I often wondered about this, take strawberries, Elsanta, many producers use this and other known names of strawberry but my ones probably like yours always taste different. The strawberry plant I planted last year tasted better this year and was so sweet I was picking them half-ripe just to beat the...

Re: Controversial diet matters.

Hi Richard, like the netting over the blue hoops looks very neat, did you make this yourself or brought off the peg. I worked this out myself on a rainy day indoors with pencil and paper, the idea was first based on a polythene cover. Then the enviromesh to slow the wind and I realized I had a good...

Re: Controversial diet matters.

Thanks, the potato starch made it soft and inhibited the usual lofty rise so not a lot of big holes and a bit like store-bought bread. Regarding the other matters, seems like I spent my whole adult life trying to change people I love towards what I regard as sensible approaches though 50% of my audi...

Re: Controversial diet matters.

It stopped raining, we had a half builders-type wheelbarrow full overnight. No big compered to Coverack and no-doubt other places. Just to prove the diversity of Kitchen Garden threads I have three photos for those who like me love a few photos, first, and I hope this is in the correct order otherwi...

Re: Controversial diet matters.

Thanks Emma, I had assumed no one would want a second hand mattress. This mattress is pristine, it's a spare room mattress rotated with mattress on a bed that's only used at weekends. Not caved in. Don't read a Silent Spring if you have a 'Dark clouds period' I have re-read it a number of times, it ...
