Re: What is the best compost to buy for 2012?
Anyone suggesting they are no good for gardening either hasn't tried them, or is being deliberately misleading. Or, as in my case, a novice thrown into the deep-end. Thanks for your view on this matter John, it does put a whole different slant on the idea of using peat-free but I can't get it out o...

Re: What is the best compost to buy for 2012?
I really don't believe it is so bad as some of you suggest. I have used it successfully for a good few years when the homemade mixes run out. . Thats interesting Tony, and just to remind you that my first batch of seeds and potting-on were in 50/50 NH and clover. They were all fine, I've used six b...

Re: What is the best compost to buy for 2012?
Fantastic and thank-you, and there I am getting all-depressed about my failure. Just sliding to one side slightly, I've just been down the lane to see how the barley is doing, it's oil-seed rape this year, not barley. I'm concerned about my poor looking stony-soil but the farmers are growing stuff i...

Re: What is the best compost to buy for 2012?
On a more positive note, sow French beans now in decent compost and you'll have a satisfying late crop. Oh ? It's not too-late for seed ? I feel sorry for the local garden-centre who bought the stuff to sell, in-good-faith because the bags have a 'Which' recommendation. And people who bought it tha...

Re: What is the best compost to buy for 2012?
Thank-goodness for this forum, even though the help was too late to stop me loosing quite a few plants to this new Horizon product at least I know it isn't all about me being a plonker. I was suspicious of that woody material so my first seedlings went into 50% peat and the rest of the New Horizon. ...

Re: compost revitalise?
Do the "bean test" on any horse muck or cow muck before using it. . I did a search for the 'Bean-test', lots of references but I can't find the details. Please help. And-yes, possibly more stupid questions coming up. Let me guess, plant a bean plant in material with the muck in it. If it ...

Re: compost revitalise?
Don't just give up on a good supply of compost especially horse or pony manure it is too valuable to miss. JB. What about cow-poo, I have lot's of well-rotted and now dry cow-poo in the adjacent farm-barns where the cattle used to live. What I did so far is to treat it the same way as RHS recommend...

Re: Internet weather forecasts
Maybe because where I live, on the Strumble peninsular, the weather is often quite different to the regular-forecasts. I use three different weather forecasting sites that seem to put a more regional slant on coast areas. Been using them for ten years and whilst they all get their information from t...

Re: Is this the place to say Hello ?
Thanks for the welcome Westi. I've been dealing with this one acre plot for ten years, when we arrived all the wildflower had succumbed to farming practice and to some extent development of the old farm into three separate dwellings. The farmhouse and two barns, we live in what used to be a milking ...

Hi Richard we already have o ne w h o already does daft Regards Arnie Ahhh, Ok, I'll loosen-up on daft then if I'm in good company. Re: Is this the place to say Hello ?
Thank-you. I already settled in on the basis of my reading. Almost got to know some of you, don't be fooled by the lovely look of the plot. The weather comes from the sea on three sides, my first batch of beans were levelled by the wind two weeks ago before the slugs had a chance. Anywhere there is ...

Sorry, I just deleted because it was massive. I need to find a smaller photo.
Try this link, better than a massive photo.

Is this the place to say Hello ?
Hello anyway. I've been reading this forum for two weeks, got sorted with a few problems and now I have a few more. At the age of 70 I'm embarrassed to be a fresher at allotment-gardening and whilst I've grown stuff, clearly it was more by luck than judgement that anything grew. And often it did. I'...
