water butt

Can anyone recommend where to look for large plastic containers to use as a water butt, container for planting, etc? We are in Manchester and a quick search around on the internet didn't find much. Doesn't need to be anything new or fancy, just CHEAP :)

Thanks

crossword clue

Ok all of you, please use your extensive food growing knowledge to give me the answer to this clue from today's Guardian crossword

Clue: type of melon

_ G _ N

Pretty sure the N is right, but G maybe wrong. It's driving us nuts.

Cheers

raspberries

We grew Joan J last year and had an excellent crop on it's first year. Can recommend them for flavour and easy to freeze. However, I am wondering if Autumn varieties might be a waste of you nice cage as the birds didn't really bother mine. I think I read somewhere that they don't tend to bother much...

sprouts

mung beans and adzuki (can't remember spelling) are what I normally use. They are bigger sprouts so good for stir fries, caserole toppings etc. Nice and crunchy. I get them cheaply from a Chinese supermarket.

Good healthy food for very cheap.

pumpkin curd

A very useful recipe for pumpkin curd was in another mag a few month ago. It was basically boiled/steamed mashed pumpkin then cooked with lemon, sugar and butter. My husband and I both find it very nice. We only had a large bland pumpkin to use up though so it was a good way of adding some flavour. ...

Thanks for your help

Thank you all for your advice, however I am still very novice at all of this. Could anyone spell it out a bit for me. What do you mean/how do you "pre-germinate" the seeds? I was assuming you simply planted them direct into the loo rolls filled with seed compost. Is it a damp kitchen roll sort of th...

sowing parsnips in loo rolls

I remember this topic coming up last year and going into some detail about how and why to do this, however I have searched the old forum and can't find the thread. Anyone kindly willing to explain the process to me?

thanks for all the tips

I will try and remember all the useful advice. I have bough Avalon (butternut) to try as it promised better results in the north (Manchester). Sounds like I should have a go at crown prince as everyone has good things to say about it. I also picked up Winter Festival (pumpkin) in a seed sale last su...

compact plant trainers

I am thinking of getting a couple of these. m Any thoughts on whether they are worth it or not? I am hoping they will allow me a lot more space on my windowsills as last year I ran out of room. Most seem to be around the price offered at organic gardening, but if anyone knows of where to get them ch...

cabbage white fly

We appear to have cabbage white fly on our kale. What is the best approach? Do we harvest and use what we can before we lose it? Also will it affect our PSB which is in the same bed?

Any help would be much appreciated!
