So what heater would be good? I hear gas ones tend to cause lots of condensation, but at the moment we don't have electricity where the greenhouse is going to be.

Top advice from everyone as usual! Feel a bit more reassured that I will be able to do it, with a bit of careful planning. Yes, I am getting a greenhouse! V. excited - it's a housewarming pressie from my mum. Good idea about the beans too, Jenny. Might try that. I wasn't going to do much fruit - may...

In my garden in my old house, the only space for my veg plot (which was tiny - I had an allotment too) was up against an east facing wall. The sun would be gone by midday, and yet I still had v. good crops of rocket, lettuce and french and borlotti beans. One year I even had a courgette plant that t...

Yes, I thought I might even resort to growing potatoes only in sacks, and just new ones, as those are so yummy. Might try ideas like 3 sisters (as seen on Carol Kleins' prog), and doing lots of underplanting and catch cropping. Thought maybe raised beds might get more produce too... There are fields...

How big is your plot??

I have had an allotment of 90' x 30' for 3 years, and an extra 1/2 plot for 1 year, both of which I've had to give up 'cos we're moving. Our new house has an area of 35' x 25' which I am going to have as my veg plot. Feel a bit nervous that this won't be enough space! However, having had the luxury ...

Malk and Deb, your pix are v. inspiring. Watch out here I come with timber, saw and nails (run for cover...) Maybe someone will rush to my rescue too (not). My OH will just stand at kitchen window laughing at my efforts.

Good recycling re: pallets. Will have to see if there's anywhere similar round our way.

I think it's certainly been worth the effort, the plot looks v. neat and - dare I say - easier to maintain?? Maybe that's just an illusion 'cos it's all so neat!

Deb and Malk, I have a 'thing' about raised beds, cos I am going to be doing some of my own this year, so forgive me interrogating you - your beds look fantastic! Did you make them out of timber - they look green, did you paint them with special stuff? If they are timber, was it pressure treated/tre...

I'm a firm believer in there's never anywhere too small to grow SOMETHING edible. So good luck with your mini plot. I had a similarly small plot to start with - notice those words 'to start with'. BEWARE: First I had one 90' x 30' allotment. Then one and a half plots. Now we're moving house to ensur...

John Seymour's book is the one that got me started on growing veggies. It even tells you how to slaughter a pig, etc!!! In my modern 3 bed semi at the time, with its postage stamp garden, it wasn't altogether appropriate!! This book has recently been reprinted and revised. It's well worth having. Th...

I tried sprouts one year on a 'no dig' site, and they all 'blew'. Following year I rammed them into an open site, compacting the earth as hard as I could, and they were fine. So ..... Cabbages headed up nicely. Have never, NEVER been able to grow a decent cauli, so have given up for the time being!!...
