Re: Non peat based composts

I have not used peat based for a long time. Living in Somerset the peat extraction does leave water habitats for lots of wildlife, but as we know it is not carbon neutral, and can never be replaced. I do find it hard to find a peat compost that I like, as most stockists sell what they can get hold o...

Re: Late Spring Bits and Bobs.

Probably 150 / 200 mm of rain here in Somerset in the past few days. As for weeds, I get a lot of ground-elder, and it is not due to home made compost, just really hard to get all the white bits of root out of clay soil. If we don't add manure and other composts on our shale / clay substrate, we get...

Re: PEACE AND QUIET

I suppose I should have been clearer. One particular chap has been using his badly serviced rotovator for many hours every day for 3 or 4 days constantly. Thrashing the soil to death!! Anyway - moan over!!!

PEACE AND QUIET

There's probably no solution to what I'm about to have a bit of a whinge about. Is else on allotment site a bit fed up with the level of noise of old rotavators lawnmowers this time of year .....as it's almostconstant. My only solution is to listen to the radio with headphones on. Anyone else been b...

Re: Lockdown one Rescues success

Generally the last 12 months have been good, no holidays no leaving the area, and I retired March last year only to carry on as a sessional worker, that way I choose the hours and the days. Bottom line is loads of time on the allotment, less rushing and more time to do things properly. All in all, w...

Re: Early Spring Bits and Bobs

In the allotment greenhouse sowing many many seeds cabbages onions sunflowers tomatoes etc. Also my absolute favourite Johnny Walker who is on Radio 2. Very satisfying is that I just fixed a couple couple of rattly plastic panes in the greenhouse. But most annoying is this strong breeze that just wo...

Re: ALLOTMENT ASSOCIATION MACHINERY

I think training insurance and servicing with an appropriate safety certificate being issued is the only way

I think the no hire during COVID is a cop out. Wiping the equipment down with anti-bac wipes before and after hire is enough to be covid secure.
