Absent Gooseberry Sawfly

For the first time since I have lived here, there is not a sign of the sawfly larva on the gooseberries this year.

Is it just me being lucky this year, or is there a general lack of them?

Re: Early Summer Bits and Bobs.

It's a madhouse in the garden at the moment, with all the young birds about There are greenfinches, goldfinches, chaffinches, blue tits, great tits, sparrows, starlings, blackbirds, jackdaws and dunnocks, all with varying amounts of young being fed, or feeding themselves. All the while the pigeons a...

Re: Early Summer Bits and Bobs.

Back from a very pleasant couple of weeks in Austria, where we had a mixture of hot sun, cloudy days, rain and snow Spent the last week getting the garden back under control again. The weeds and grass always seem to grow twice as fast when you are not looking I sowed the runners, climbing french and...

Re: Here we go Bits and Bobs.

Another glorious day here again Put up some greenhouse shading this morning. Sowed some Palace parsnips in my new raised bed. I've sown a different variety in another part of the garden, so I can compare how they grow. Sowed runners and climbing french beans direct in the ground this year. I'm going...

Re: Here we go Bits and Bobs.

I found about 25 snails lurking under a spare roof slate whilst weeding my strawberry border this morning so "repatriated " them to a nearby public footpath. I should have put some red nail varnish on their shells to see if it's true that they have a rehoming instinct and all turn up back...

Re: Now it is Spring Time (Confirmed)

Quite a pleasant day today. Sunny most of the time I had a few Charlotte seed potatoes left, so I planted them in tubs. Made up 3 tubs with a mixture of topsoil and FYM, and a wigwam of canes, for the sweet peas. Sat on the bench with the dog in the sun for a while Busy day all round really

Re: Now it is Spring Time (Confirmed)

Hi, I do grow rainbow mix occasionally. However, growing these made me realise I love the yellow ones and not so keen on the purple ones. So I regularly grow Yellowstone (I think that's what it's called) - really sweet, great crop last year in a raised bed. And don't grow purple haze - found it to ...

Re: Now it is Spring Time (Confirmed)

Hi PJ They are worth growing but because it is a mix you take your chances and the ones I grow don't give varieties on the pack - just rainbow! Some are not too great, but acceptable! Many have coloured outers & orange centres - they are nice! Just experiment Pj & if you can work out the va...

Re: Now it is Spring Time (Confirmed)

They are worth growing then :)

When I've grown carrots in the garden here before, I haven't been troubled by carrot fly much.
Very few people around here seem to grow veg.

The main pest here is the cabbage white, but as I'm not growing brassicas, they shouldn't worry me :)

Re: Now it is Spring Time (Confirmed)

Much nicer day here, although the wind is getting up now.
Sunshine for most of the day :)

I sowed some Hurst Greenshaft peas, and some Rainbow Mix carrots this morning. I've never grown Rainbow Mix before, but they were a present from my granddaughter, so must be grown

Anybody tried them before?

Mixed weather here today as well.

Started frosty, then we had sunshine, rain, hail, more sunshine, and now it's raining again

Re: Ravaged sweet corn plants

Hi Barry,

I'm on the Kent coast, and haven't thought about starting runner beans yet.
Plenty of time yet for those :)

Re: Now it is Spring Time (Confirmed)

Another cold day here again. Some bright spells and some rain showers.

I sowed some parsnips this morning and pegged some fleece over them.

Looks as though a couple of the peas are showing through :)
