Re: Another Scam?

I've had the "you have a problem with your computer" scam calls as well. I let them talk a while then said "but I don't have a computer". They apologised and rang off. Hopefully they might have taken my name off their list as well. Another good response I've found goes like this....

Re: It's raining!

The map was interesting and confirmed how it has felt here. I'm in Cumbria very close to where Cumbria is closest to the Isle of Man. Just about average rainfall. There has been a difference though, I think, in that there have been more dry, warm days than is normal, with heavier rain on the days it...

Re: Things ripening early

Hi Nature's Babe My GH thermostat is set at 10C at this time of year so it is pretty well unheated. The end of April here was very warm and everything seemed to get off to a good start. Since the first week in May we have had rain fairly regularly but not much sun so the GH has struggled to get warm...

Re: Things ripening early

Tomatoes growing well - 3 or 4 trusses, the first ones having some small fruits, v small cucumbers appearing on 2ft high plants which are still growing quite strongly, aubergines have flower buds. Melon plants are only about 9" high (need a bit of warmth I think) and seem to have stalled but ha...

Re: Summer's here?!

Very heavy rain last night and this morning. Sunshine and 60mph winds this afternoon. Disconnected the automatic window opener on the windward side of the GH - the window was probably OK but was moving about a bit. The one on the lee side and the low level vent are keeping the temperature around 25C...

Re: Veg boxes - would you buy one?

Peter You beat me to the question! A parallel would be why it is more fuel efficient for a diesel-hauled trainload of passengers to go from A to B than it is for them all to go in cars even though the loco will consume more fuel per mile. It is the fuel per mile per passenger that matters. Or the fu...

Re: Suitable Peg/Fixing Advice Pls

Maybe tie it down to weights (bricks?) rather than rely on pegs.

Thanks OH. I'm getting the greenhouse sorted out for planting today so once that's done I'll check the roots.

Re: Planting tomatoes

Mike

I'll be planting on in the greenhouse which I'm keeping at 10C minimum so frost shouldn't be an issue. Good idea to pot half on though. Varieties are Sungold, Gardeners' delight and Roma.

Planting tomatoes

Hello All You might remember this is my first season with a greenhouse. In the past I've grown tomatoes outdoors after sowing them on a windowsill. I'm amazed at how much better the plants are this year - much sturdier and generally more healthy looking. Now the question. I was planning to put them ...

Re: Offal-or Awful!

Several years ago I was in a restaurant in France and a dish called Ris de Veau was on the menu. My translation was some sort of veal with rice. Wrong!! The French for rice is riz not ris. Ris is Thymus gland! It arrived and was a brown mass, sort of like very soft liver. Tasty but not something I'd...

Re: Capillary matting

Dear John and OH Thanks both. I've time to experiment a little before I need to put the plants in. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm thinking that unless the experiments are conclusive before I plant, I might just put all the pots on the matting and not water a couple each of the Aubergines and the...

Re: Qualcast 43s just dies when hot!

I think you said you had bought a new ignition unit. I would say not to assume that it is OK just because it is new. I know nothing at all about these units, but I do know a bit about old vehicle ignition, and one of the classic symptoms of a worn out magneto is its ability to spark when cold but no...

Re: Capillary matting

Dear OH I did as you suggested, tried a pot filled with the compost I'm going to use. It seemed OK but maybe the take up was a bit slower than would be needed if there was a plant in there as well. Though maybe this would simply increase to suit. I know I have a fault in keeping compost too wet so m...
