Re: I've been procrastinating...

Alright, I guess I have to rush to the garden store then. I don't want these to be eaten like last year!

Re: Kiwano (horned melon)

Just a small update on the kiwanos, they are in the window sill. It's not the perfect spot but I just can't put a greenhouse on the balcony. Perhaps they can grow outside in a couple of weeks as the temperatures at night are rising above 15°C now. At the end of the week we'll be facing daytime tempe...

I've been procrastinating...

Also perhaps a reminder for others on here, it's time to put some netting around the cabbages! I have been procrastinating and I am very lucky to have none of the leaves eaten by the cabbage whites yet. I try to grow these in a large container on my balcony kitchen garden and they look amazing reall...

Endive starts to flower

Hey everyone,

One of my 6 endive plants is growing a thick stem in the middle and it's growing in height. For all I know this means it's starting to flower, but is it still edible at this point? And should I harvest the other ones as soon as possible so they don't flower too?

Re: I cannot be not worried about this...

As we are an island we are surrounded by water so why can't we use it. Really hope I will use the first water powered electricity anytime soon! When I first started growing veg I read the square foot gardening book Is it literally called the Square Foot Gardening Book? Because it sounds like a very...

Re: I cannot be not worried about this...

... have water tanks built in the roof to collect rainwater ... We have four water butts installed In our garden to collect water from roofs ... too arduous for me to carry the full water cans drawn from them than it is to switch on the garden hose ... My father connected a water tank with a tap to...

Re: Garlic going to seed already

Not suffering the same problem but I once harvested way too early. The bulbs were very small but a whole lot stronger in taste/smell than the larger ones!

Re: I cannot be not worried about this...

They say we will only realise it when it's too late but I don't buy that! Wanted to dedicate this topic to finding simple solutions we have as I wonder what everybody else is doing. I would love to help even more and learn from what others are doing too. Besides, it doesn't hurt to spread a little a...

I cannot be not worried about this...

Last years drought was terrible! Many trees started dropping leaves months before the fall season even started and some even dropped their bark. For a moment I thought they were all dying. It shocked me when I saw the locals coming to the neighbourhood with a tractor carrying a huge water tank. Now ...

I've heard it countless times about banana peels! They are also rich in calcium and perfect to mix through compost. Egg shells are indeed full of calcium too, but a whole egg? Never heard that one before...

Re: Dragonfruit seeds give-away!

I don't have the climate either, but indoors they seem to do well. I once found a video of someone growing dragonfruit in the UK so that means after all, it is possible!

Edit: Looked up those epiphytes and wow, I thought I was looking at another variety of dragonfruit, they look alike!

Re: Plant identification? Looks like cabbage/kale.

Thank you a lot, I have looked it up and that is exactly what this plant is! It was given to me as possibly romanesco seeds. It turned out to be something quite different!

Plant identification? Looks like cabbage/kale.

Normally I don't ask for a plant identification and much rather look it up myself, but this one left me puzzled. I did find 'yellow rocket' or its scientific name; Barbarea vulgaris. This one looks a lot like the plant I have here but the leaves are shaped differently. Please can anyone help me out ...
