Re: Tomatoes - sow in trays or straight into individual pots?
I sow 2 or 3 seeds in a thimble pot, select the strongest then pot up deeply in 3" when they have grown a bit. No root disturbance this way.

Aging
George Carlin's Views on Aging Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we're kids? If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions. 'How old are you?' 'I'm four and a half!' You're never thirty-six and a half. You're ...

Cold brings them out
Not my best pictures but two bits of unusual behaviour for us. Long Tailed Tit ground feeding and Robin on the peanuts.

Re: When to start chitting potatoes
Light but cool.
Even if they don't really need chitting I think they are better where you can inspect them easily and keep them separated so you might as well chit them, after all nobody has said it makes them worse.

Re: When to start chitting potatoes
I plant my first earlies first week in March under a cloche - usually Rocket but this year also Maris Bard in deference to the forum - and my second earlies and maincrop first week in April - Charlotte and Maris Piper. Bought them all last Tuesday and they are on egg trays on the spare bedroom windo...

Britain's Laura Robson remains on track for her second junior Grand Slam title after beating Noppawan Lertcheewakarn to reach the Australian Open final. The match - a repeat of the 2008 Wimbledon final which Robson also won - was delayed by two hours to allow the temperature to drop from a peak of 4...

Re: Who has succumbed to putting first seeds in!!!
Not cracked yet but have filled some pots and modules, watered them with Cheshunt and put them in the propagator to warm up for sowing tomorrow. Will be sowing Aubergines, Tomatoes, Cabbage Primo, Cauliflower Snowball, Basil, Parsley, Lettuce and possibly some of the free Oregano I have just redisco...

Re: CHEAP SEED
Went into a Poundstore for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Was hoping that diaries would have started being discounted for my garden plan but couldn't beat 4.99 until I got a nice Week-to-View for £1. Didn't spot they did seeds though, will have to go back!

Re: Funnies to brighten your evening
I liked the shot in "Oz and James Drink to Britain" last night of the Irish hairdresser called "Ryan Hair" - Nick Park would have been proud of that. Liked these funnies but wasn't taken with the Virgin complaint. Can't get interested in flying problems, I'd tax them out of the s...

Re: Grenhouse Fumigation
That's really what I was trying to find out. I have three greenhouse books of various vintages and I have searched the RHS but the only place that sulphur smoking seems to be advised is on the sulphur candle tin! I guess the idea is gas will penetrate all the nooks and crannies better than a liquid ...

Re: Grenhouse Fumigation
Went to the garden centre today (Gordon Riggs 10% Winter sale - sadly no extra 5% for spending over £100 this year) and found Sulphur Candle 300g label price £4.95 and Chempak chip grade sulphur 750g label price £3.25. So if I can work out how to burn it, I have seen a recipe for blending with beesw...

Re: Best veg for the highlands?
I don't think height is your problem - I'm at 600' and grow most things - but I'm not so sure about latitude! Whatever you do don't believe all you are told, I think people are generally pessimistic about what (and when) is possible. Assuming you are there for the long haul, start a diary and experi...

Sounds good but how many properties are near enough to a significant population to be any use?

I just liked the relationship between crap and analised but I suppose analysed would have had the same effect.
