Harvesting maincrop potatoes

Hi, Unbelievably after the dry spring the potatoes I am digging are big and a good crop. My question is the Sarpo Mira planted on 16th April are starting to go yellow with brown spots - since I have a good crop underneath should I cut off the haulms leave for a couple of weeks and then dig? It just ...

Re: Failing Ferline tomatoes

THanks all,
I think I will give up on them in future years - one year I had a fantastic crop from them but it was when they were introduced but it was a long hot summer and nothing that good since.
Maybe the early Latah is the answer alongside the usual GD and Sungold etc.

Failing Ferline tomatoes

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone else is having problems with Ferline tomatoes this year. The others I grow in the cold greenhouse are doing fine but the Ferline are sulking and the lower leaves turning yellow. I feed them with comfrey tea and earlier in the year gave them a seaweed drench and a f...

Re: Salsify

Hi All,
I regularly grow salsify and enjoy it cooked in its skins (since it 'bleeds horribly) and then lightly fry in butter. It has a very distinctive taste a bit like oysters hence its other name of oyster plant.... But this year I will leave a few to grow on for their flowers and stems.

Re: Lemon Tree

Hi Geacher, I have had two citrus trees for some time now and they do bear fruit! They are relatively easy to look after as long as you remember to get some Citrus food for summer and some for winter (two different types). I usually find Chempak in the garden centre though expensive lasts for ages. ...

Re: Old Wives tale

Hi,
Well lI am not going to apologise for the fact that I have today spot sprayed the couch grass at the edge of the beds with Roundup in a bid to stop it spreading into the beds from the turf paths. I know the answer is not to have the paths but ...............

Re: Purple sprouting broccoli

Thanks JB,
Will remove the heads asap since I was hoping to be picking by now. I have for the first time this year sown white SB for the summer since I hve discovered it as one of the veggies that is soo much better than the shop version.

Purple sprouting broccoli

Hi,
I see from other sites that you should snap off the head of PSB to get the side shoots to develop - when do you do this? I still have nothing to harvest so was wondering should I wait a bit longer or force it into action.

Re: Hanging Baskets.

Hi,
Is it possible to use the moss from the lawn - since if that is the case I have more than enough to supply many hanging baskets if I just get it scarified.....

Old Wives tale

Hello Everyone,
I was reading somewhere that if you plant turnip seed it will deter couch grass - has anyone come across this/is there any truth in it ?

Thanks

Re: SHREADED PAPER

Hi Tangoman, I have found that torn up newspaper (well soaked) works well but found that actual shredded good quality white paper didn't seem to breakdown so quickly - maybe it was just conditions in the compost bin at the time but would be interested to see if anyone else has any views on the quali...

Re: Poultry question

Thanks - have sprinkled lime over the ground to sweeten and will rake and put some grass seed down covered with wire to give it a chance when I move them back.
