Our Virginia creeper is starting to lose its first leaves. And yesterday I pulled up and composted all the broccoli plants, but what a harvest we had from them!

Yesterday's sunshine brought out the butterflies: small tortoiseshell, peacock, red admiral, wall brown, comma and lots of large and small whites. I was lucky to be able to retire at 53 and have never regretted it. I loved my job and thought I would miss the people, the buzz and the commute by train through lovely countryside, but, 30 years on, I still know I made the right decision. So, go for it, Westi and count down the days, retropants!

Retropants, so sorry to hear about your tomatoes (and your toe!). That must be awful, to lose the whole crop. Will you grow so-called blight resistant ones next year? When we had two abandoned plots on our small site, the other tenants scythed/strimmed the weeds, simply to avoid all the weed seeds blowing over everybody else's plot. It also meant that anybody new wouldn't be TOO put off by the sight of a jungle!
