Snooky As a retired brewery man and beer taster I can tell you that Triple F is usually great beer. The others to look out for are Dark Star (From Ansty, Sussex) and Ranmore and Shere Drop, from Surrey Hills Brewery. Don't know if you can get them in Alton though. Also try a 'cup' of TEA (Tongham En...

Leeks

This is really a follow up to Sylvie's post of a few weeks back, but I've just lifted my first leeks (Musselburgh) to make some soup. As a whole they've grown the best ever, but a few of them, though big and strong looking, have started to rot at the roots. I expect this in Febraury after a wet wint...

Thanks all. Looks like a multi-attack from combined forces - have to call in the heavy artillery! Alan: Lettuce is Rosetta. JB: It is a wooden greenhouse, but cedar, mounted on concrete edging. But floor is paving slabs, which I douse with Jesus Fluid every Spring to keep the woodlice down. Have to ...

Lettuce - update

Sorry to bore you all with this but it's annoying me! In the greenhouse this morn and found one of the potted lettuces "wilting". Excavated it gently and it fell in half, just below the base of the leaves, under the soil, just above the start of the tiny roots. Brownie rot-coloured on the ...

Winter Lettuce

Sorry John, I wasn't clear. I put seedlings in the greenhouse bed, about 3in high, raised in a tray.

Winter lettuce

I've recently sown some Rosetta winter lettuce in the greenhouse bed where tomatoes were, but some of them have "wilted" and the leaves are falling off. Thought it was slugs, but pellets have been untouched.Perhaps some other creepy-crawlie in the soil? Those I put in pots on a bench are t...

Worldwide webs?

When I looked out of our back windows Sunday morning I was astonished to see five single strand spiders' webs, each like diamond necklaces with the dew. What was remarkable was that they hung from the quince tree to the washing line, at least 20 feet! I've never seen them that far before. There was ...

OH's command...

OH commands, I respond- loneliness can be a curse or a blessing! P...ing down with rain here in sodden Surrey this Sunday morn, but I'm delighted with my runners, they're having a real late season explosion. Had a new 'over the fence' neighbour move in earlier this year. Lovely man, retired nurserym...

Freezer "bubble wrap"

Some time ago my local fish merchant gave me some "bubble wrap" type plastic sheets. Each is about 18" by 12" and comprises lots of water-filled pockets. They tell me that they can't get them to order or where they come from, but they are completely flexible and fantastically use...

Potatoes in bag

Due to age I'm thinking of giving up the main potato patch. I can grow a few earlies in large pots, but someone has told me that they've seen successful spuds grown in black dustbin liners. Can anyone describe the procedure for this - what soil to use, how to plant etc? Many thanks.

Late radishes

My radish packet (French Breakfast) says I can do successive sowings until September, but I can't seem to get much result after early July. Mid July sowings have come up all top and no radish, despite being in same area as previous OK sowings. Any tips, please?
Thanks, John N
