Yes we are the publishers of Organic Gardening magazine too Mike. It's excellent....but I prefer KG! Hmmm, could be biased I guess!

Hi Gang Your editorial team (Emma and I) are always looking for interesting new features. I hope for example, that you enjoyed the look at Bulldog Tools and tour of the great kitchen garden at Pashley Manor as well as the updates on oriental veg, apples, plums etc that appeared in the August issue. ...

Kitchen Garden online

Hi Folks I am genuinely sorry if some of you are feeling neglected. I am looking at ways to link the mag and website more closely - the KG Online column is one attempt to do this and it's interesting and encouraging to know that you look for it in the mag. It was only missed from the August issue as...

contaminated manure

Hi folks I think I can help with this one. I first heard of the problem at BBC Gardeners World Live the other week from a keen allotment holder and later received a press release from the RHS advice dept who have been getting lots of calls about the topic. As a result we have a full news item about ...

Hi Guys

Check out your April issue, page 7 and also my Ed's intro in the same issue - it tells you all about this. Saw it in Grow Your Own indeed!

A sad loss

I was very sorry to learn of the sad news today from John Boy and would like to add to the comments already made by forum members on behalf of all at KG. Allan will be sorely missed on this forum for his great knowledge and the lively debates he often sparked. He was a true son of the soil. RIP Allan.

Hi Loriette Having seen the pics I am sure that they are chafer grubs. Should have guessed when you said they were an inch long, but I didn't click. Goldilox's squashing technique is as good as most, but you can get a bio control for chafers, but it needs to be used in July/August and is intended fo...

Hi Brooklynodog I don't think its silly. I have a small polytunnel and love it to bits. It's great for growing all sorts of things that need a little extra protection and in the winter I grow salad leaves and some lettuces in it. My only regret is that I don't have room for a bigger one as it is so ...

Hi Loirette I agree with OH. If the grubs are c-shaped and creamy coloured, they are vine weevils. You could use the biological control once the compost is around 5C. We will have lots about bio controls in the May issue - not specifically about vine weevils, but the contact details of most of the s...

Thanks guys, my thoughts entirely. If I've ever come across rats on the plot (and I know there are always plenty) it's usually in or around the compost heap.

Rats and soil coverings

Anyone ever had problems with rats under polythene used to cover the soil to warm it up in the spring? I have never heard of it before, but one reader phoned KG after being told by her allotment secretary to remove the polythene on her plot as it would encourage the pests.

Thanks O H. Not bad to be smiling on the first day back at work after having had a week on the north east coast. Must be the one place that was colder than my garden in the midlands! The view and the walking more than made up for it though!

Hi Guys Yes this is a topic that comes up regularly in the KG office and your postings here really sum up our dilemma. Some readers tell us that our current habit of bringing out, for example, the April mag at the beginning of March can be confusing as they then are not sure whether the jobs should ...

Bigfoot

Thanks Old Herbaceous. I was starting to feel a little unloved!

Thanks for your suggestion, I'll certainly pass it on. And no I would never wear inappropriate footwear in the garden. In fact I'm rarely seen anywhere without my hobnail boots on (except in the shower where they tend to go rusty).
