Re: Autumn bits and bobs
That's good. I grow a few new ones from cuttings of my favourites each year too. It produces nice strong new plants and increases your stock. I put the dry compost round the smaller tubers in particular as it seems to stop them shrivelling as much. This week's frost has damaged some of the flowers b...

Re: Autumn bits and bobs
I've just been watching Gardeners' World and saw something I've never seen or heard of before - Monty was washing his dahlia tubers before storing them. Have I missed something all these years, does everyone else wash them? Dad loved dahlias and always rubbed off the loose soil cut the stems to abou...

Re: Introducing myself
Welcome from me too. It's been a good growing year if you could keep everything watered and I'm glad you've enjoyed what you've tried for a start. Most gardeners are optimists but have to get used to failures too. The weather has a big influence on which crops do well, and whatever it does you will ...

Re: Autumn bits and bobs
Thanks, I think I'd have to go on a photography course to get the best out of some proper kit. The point and click ones make people lazy don't they.

Re: cheese
On the cheese theme, Jamie Oliver made a very good suggestion the other night and I don't know why I've never thought of it myself. Grate all the small pieces of cheese you have lurking in the fridge before they get smelly and keep them in a tub in the freezer - easy to sprinkle on your cooking, mak...

Re: Autumn bits and bobs
Yes Westi it was strangely mild here today warmer outside than in the house. I did a few jobs off my list, one of which was potting up some Pride of Madeira seedlings which I discovered next to the dead parent plants that last winter killed off. It was a lovely surprise as I thought I'd lost them an...

Re: Planning for next year
I've never tried growing watermelon I've always thought they needed longer summers than we usually get. I don't think I'll bother with my Thai pumpkins again as the 20 ft plants have produced just four fruits, the largest being 3 inches across!!! The shoots were very nice though. The Thai sugar snap...

Re: Lack of fungal diseases on trees and top fruit
Our woods are full of Fly Agaric and lots of other interesting kinds so the mild weather after a bit of rain seems to have brought them out.
Glad the dry summer has lasted long enough to discourage the airborne fungal infections.

Re: Cake
Can you tell us the recipe please Diane. I was looking for mine yesterday but couldn't find it and made an ordinary fruit cake instead. It is a traditional way to make fruit cake which most people round here use. Your friend needs educating. Has she tried eating some? The orange cake sounds deliciou...

Re: Autumn bits and bobs
Sounds dangerous Geoff. It's just been wet and windy here but we are in a valley and the trees filter the wind a bit. The strongest gust today has been 25mph in the garden so it must be bad higher up. I've taken some streptocarpus into the greenhouse to re pot but not done it yet. I decided to clean...

Lack of fungal diseases on trees and top fruit
The dry summer has made a marked difference to fungal diseases on plants in general. There is no apple scab this year and the quince tree that usually suffers badly has kept it's leaves and produced a bucketfull of fruit. It goes to show how our usual damp weather affects our crops especially if we ...

Re: Thinning out pond in Autumn
Yes, OH , that's what I was hoping to avoid. I've got some big pieces of marine ply I could use to lie on for a bit of extra reach. Wait for the splash!!!! I ought to have put my swimsuit on and done it this week in the sunshine.
