Grasp an apple gently but firmly and lift it up. If it comes away from the branch easily then it's ripe and ready. If it doesn't want to leave the branch, slowly lower the fruit into the original position and try again in a few days.

I grew a reduced number of garlic(s) this year due to white rot. I found that the hard necks fared far better than the soft necks. Next year I'll grow just hard necks.

Don't forget, if the plot is in such a state you may be able to refuse this plot and not have to go to the bottom of the list.
