Re: Lupin seeds and goldfinches

Ooh, your are well trained. Mine like the lavender hedge but I've not seen them tidy up the dandelions yet!

Re: Bread flour

Most flour and yeast is packaged for commercial (bakery) use, as they use the bulk of supplies- that is why no real bread shortage (just sparadic over-purchasing by consumers). The (dometic) shortage was a perfect storm. Flour in smaller bags was selling at extremely high volumes (they package it we...

Re: Lupin seeds and goldfinches

There is an edible version of sweet lupin (RealSeeds has them) but the flowering ones we all love, are not for human consumption. I have never seen the goldfiches eat them either (and we have so many of them!). I just put my deadheaded tops in the compost, no problems after all these years. Same thi...

Re: Toilet roll tubes

Interesting Geoff, mine must be pre-sell-out. They are old but I take good care of them. I did see some in the last year or so and thought the material did look a lot thinner than mine. Shame. A great idea let down by the cost savings of using flimsy materials.

Re: Toilet roll tubes

It must be brand-related as my loo roll tubes are not white inside. So it must just depend - good spotting! I collect them in a basket and outside of sowing season they are torn up and added to the compost bin. I guess I don’t use enough paper towels to try cutting them down for use! I use them ever...

Re: Quality compost?

Humax is peat-based, and I do not use peat products. For a soil improver, I would go for Dalefoot Double Strength. It is too strong to use neat in pots: They have other products for seeds, potting, etc. I got a good deal, believe it or not, from a Sarah Raven a few pennies cheaper and I had a free s...

Re: What I learned about strawberries...

I just harvested some Framberries last night (a type of strawberry: curious? look up strasberry in Wikipedia), the plants were a gift last year and I just bunged them in a pot, not expecting much. Wow! A flavour explosion - vey rich and tasty. Very dark red, like you want a strawberry to look. Has a...

Re: Early Summer Bits and Bobs.

Primrose: Scandinavians use redcurrants in all manner of muffins, cakes, and tarts. Have a browse on the interwebby for some ideas. Although we love the jelly as a savory accompaniment, too! If I find I have more than I can freeze, use, or share, I take off the netting and let the blackbirds have th...

Re: What I learned about strawberries...

I grew a whole big planter of White Soul wood strawberries last year- really lovely. I brought some to work for an "eat and tell" and they went down a storm.. Most were skeptical, but once they tried them they said they were not quite a strawberry flavour but really tasty. I just planted s...

Re: Early Summer Bits and Bobs.

Ah, gardeners must be made of stern stuff or maybe philosophers at heart. My first toms are ripening, the French beans I delayed planting out are shooting up their canes, salads are exploding. and my cucumbers are dead - victims of last week's unexpected cold am (2C). I keep looking at them, willing...

Re: Many ants in my peach pot

Thanks Sally! That sounds a like simple solution - I will dig out a saucer and capillary matting in the am. Deterrent rather than death is a good plan.

Many ants in my peach pot

I am growing a peach "Crimson Bonfire" in a large pot in my greenhouse And very happy it is too. But this a.m. I went into the greenhouse to find massive ant earthworks in the pot: many large holes (to the nest) and lots of activity on/in the soil. I checked again for pests on the plant th...
