Broad Beans

Once again this year I'm growing broad beans in the polytunnel. Sowed the seeds a few weeks a go in modular cell trays and now they're coming through. I've gone for 'The Sutton', a dwarf variety this year as last year's Aquadulce Claudia were great but just took over. It's so windy where I am, I gav...

Re: November planted potatoes

I had a bad attack of blight last year on both Toms and Tates - did my mental state no good at all I can tell you! However, 'Mountain Magic' toms survived well - quite tasty too! In ...

Re: Saving chilli seeds?

Haven't tried saving before but having read this thread, will give it a go this year with some open-pollinated ones. There's a useful guide to going about it at: http://www.thechileman.org/guide_seedsaving.php (Tony, editorial, aka Peter Radish).

Snails and Roofing Felt

Has anybody tried roofing felt as a slug/snail deterrent? My young broccoli plant that are perched on top of the guinea pig hutch have remained totally untouched, or perhaps slugs/snails just don't like guinea pigs! I did do an experiment last week with the aptly named Sniffer the snail, who was ove...

Re: Spent Coffee Grounds on Allotments

There is an argument that they are good (though keep dogs away from them) but there is an interesting article by James Wong where he found they were actually detrimental due to the caffeine in coffee which is designed to inhibit plant growth. https://t.co/2ky4KOEo7W
