Re: sprouts

Yellow keep their colour better than the purple beans though Robo but I agree again no difference in taste. We do like to try though don't we?

Re: sprouts

Primrose I grew purple ones one year and they go green on cooking. Red Ball I think they were called. Steaming might keep a bit more colour. I prefer the traditional green.

Re: sprouts

Thank you Pa Snip for the info. £1.95 plus £2.50 postage for 20 seeds a bit pricey but I will look around first.
Happy Christmas

Re: sprouts

I am jealous OH, I was so ashamed of mine they came out today nothing worth picking. They were Wellington an old favourite now withdrawn so I shall have to think again for next year.

Re: sprouts

I don't think the variety was mentioned Westie but having tall leaves and growing close together gives them an even size for the supermarkets. Easier for trimming I would have thought to.

Re: sprouts

I wouldn't worry Primrose but the look on Country File the fields were bursting with them. If only mine looked as good. Very disappointed this year they are still so small. I am now buying and can't remember when I last needed to do that.

Re: Cover Raised bed Yes/No?

Noooooo. Let the weather do it's job, feed the birds etc, Cover it and any weed seeds still in the soil will germinate quicker than you can sow once you take it off. Slugs and snails will be snug and warm underneath to and do their business to cause havoc in the spring.

Re: Raised Beds, sometimes I'm baffled

My beds are raised but it is because of constantly adding compost/ manure etc, over 27 years. We didn't set out to raise them it was to improve the soil and keep it good. The idea of laying boards and calling it a raised bed is one I can't understand either Parsnip.

Re: White fly

The frosts should now kill of most of the White fly, sweeten the parsnips as well, just what we needed.

Re: sprouts

Wash sprouts thoroughly and any other brassica in salt water, rinse well before using. That usually draws out most nasties, even small caterpillars will float to the top and can easily be seen to dispose of.

My sprouts are slow in forming to, I put it down to the lack of rain.
