Re: Fruit cages: any use?
I have about 80 raspberries. None are caged. Birds take a few: I don't mind. Blueberries : I net. Or I would have none. Red and blackcurrants: I plant quite close together and fertilise heavily with manure and lots of compost. They grow into deep leafy swathes where the fruit hides and the birds do ...

Re: Answer to Johnboys question re quality soil.
Perhaps Nature's Babe would like to think of the Ice Age - the last one. About 20,000 years ago , where I write was covered by a layer of ice 0.75km deep and Nature had removed all the topsoil and was busy making clay . When the Ice Age finished, Stoke on Trent had lovely banks of clay we used to ma...

Re: Answer to Johnboys question re quality soil.
I have an open mind: facts and a theory to fit them. Simple. Theories with no facts: the hallmark of the misguided or the willfully wrong. Of course, you can be an Einstein and come out with theories - like light bending near massive objects - which were only proved AFTER the theory was written. But...

Re: Answer to Johnboys question re quality soil.
Of course this might make uncomfortable reading for those with a rigid, human-centred mindest who insist on having a rational, human-friendly explanation for everything - and who seek to disparage ideas and thinking that unsettles them. Well I believe in trying to have ideas which fit in with facts...

Re: Answer to Johnboys question re quality soil.
When a poster posts something at the start of their message you must always check whether it is factual or not. If they then base their whole argument on it, then you must double check. I quote NB's first line "Topsoil used to be 3 - 4 ft deep, now thanks to intensive farming methods it is bare...

Re: Squillions of sparrows
Apart from sparrows, we have thrushes. Not seen a thrush in our garden for 20 odd years. The balckbirds are doing well- lots skulking, the pheasants are expanding, the tits are tittering and the jays are doing well . Not seen a hawk for a while...but in 2008 got a poor picture of one in our front la...

Re: Answer to Johnboys question re quality soil.
I garden organically by choice. Perhaps the organic supporters will use the bodies of the 3 billion humans for fertiliser.... the 3 billion who will die from starvation if agriiculture did not use artificial fertilisers.. And all the honey bees would die from not using non-organic treatments for var...

Re: Rain at last
On Monday I replaced a broken (by cows) fencepost. A meter down the clay was virtually dry. Yesterday I replaced a post holding up raspberry canes (broken by wind). A metre down the ground was damp. We have had torrential rain, only broken for the Bee Inspector who visited yesterday and had a 1 hour...

Re: Fence preservation
Anyone advocating the use of creosote MUST say "DO NOT SPRAY". Spraying creosote in a domestic environment is dangerous. To even mention it without that caveat when the OP speciifcally stated they would prefer to spray ....... And for all we know the OP may (I am sure is not) be stoopid en...
