Hi
I agree with Jenny. The seeds are of very good quality, and seem to keep well, too, because I have had extremely good germination again from seeds kept over from last year. I, too, would recommend them.

Hi - I have a similar very shady area in my garden behind the shed, and I use it for growing shade-tolerant herbs e.g. lemon balm, parsley, chives and mint. They all seem to do quite well, but maybe they are not quite so pungent as they might be if grown in a sunnier spot.

Don't worry Granny - alkanet is not toxic - it is used in herbal medicine as a cough syrup and emollient.

What a nuisance. I do feel for you. The most annoying thing is the selfishness and dishonesty of some toerag who has caused you this inconvenience, and just shed all responsibility. So frustrating - have a hug - two hugs - from me.

Granny, it is an excellent idea. In addition to the potassium which you will be adding, members of the borage family also provide silica and phosphorus, and when eventually diluted, the resulting "tea" will make a super organic plant food - no need to worry about "correct proportions&...

Hi - have you considered WWOOFing? (Working Weeks(ends) on Organic Farms) -just do a search on WWOOF and you will find lots of sites, both in this country and abroad. I once went on one, and learnt, among other things, how to milk goats and keep bees.

You can reassure yourself that you have acted in your Mum's very best interests, and have nothing to reproach yourself with. I hope everything goes well for you all.

Hi - I grew tomato "Ildi" last year from some free seeds I got, and was really impressed - they are a small yellow "pear-shaped" cherry size - very, very prolific and in my opinion one of the best tasting I have come across, easily rivalling "Gardeners Delight" for tast...

I find it best to wait until the weeds start to grow in abundance - that gives me a very good indication that my soil is ready for seeds to germinate without them rotting off. Of course, if you use cloches or have warmed up the soil beforehand with polythene, you could sow a bit earlier - no doubt o...

We do the Big Garden Birdwatch every year, and the number of different species of birds seen varies very little - always the tits(blue, great, long-tail and coal): the finches (chaffinch, greenfinch and sometimes goldfinch); robin, blackbird, wood pigeon, dunnock. Sometimes starlings, magpie, collare...

Hi! Keep on recycling, folks! Many thanks for the idea of lolly sticks! Just a thought - it's fortunate for us that the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Tudors, Victorians, etc. didn't use plastic - we'd be up to our necks in the stuff now, with no room to grow anything

Hi Helen, I read somewhere recently that they make an excellent mulch for strawberries, being on the slightly acidic side as far as soil pH is concerned, and have the added bonus of the prickly needles deterring slugs and snails. Regards, Lyn p.s. just located the source of this info - it was in an ...

We were fortunate to escape the worst up here in Cheshire, but family in Sussex had a narrow escape after a tree crashed through their roof. Luckily no-one was injured. I had given birth to my youngest daughter that week, but the hurricane stole the limelight from the new arrival!

Definitely through the letterbox. As Chantal says, it is a much more flexible option! Besides, you can't attach free seeds to an e-mail  :D
