Re: House chicken

I'm not sure you'll approve of the menu of cracked maize, layers pellets, dried mealworms, sweetcorn and catfood, although I'm sure the lemon drizzle cake and sausage rolls will go down nicely.

Re: House chicken

You'd be very welcome OH. I'll make you up a nice bed with fresh hay and be sure to clean up after you as you potter round the kitchen.

Re: House chicken

She is loving it Primrose. She's been on her own for so long and although we've done our best to sit with her in the garden, it's not been easy. We managed just about every day this year, with her running around the garden, but now there's bird flu around, DEFRA have her in lockdown too. For a few w...

Re: Mid Winter Bits and Bobs.

We're just above freezing in Warwickshire. The padlock on our plot gate was frozen at 10am, but by 11am the trees were starting to drip. Looking forward to a balmy 6C this week!

Re: House chicken

Oh she has that alright. She's sitting by the woodburner at my feet, chatting away to Coco and Diego, who are looking disgusted at a chicken getting pole position for the heat. They're not saying anything.

Re: Mid Winter Bits and Bobs.

We're about to head to the allotment, but not planning to do much. Freezing here again, but thankfully the fog that blanketed us yesterday has cleared.

Re: House chicken

I can't believe I am now chef, fire stoker and shit shoveller to an elderly chicken!

As job descriptions go... however, as you say OH, it could be so much worse.

Re: Overworked ears

My husband has masks that have two elastic bands (top and bottom) which go right round his head. He much prefers these as he can push them down to hang around his neck.

They sell them at our local chemist.

I made JA and spinach soup this year, with a little asafoetida, and it was silky and gorgeous. I'm not a big fan of soup, but am happy to make an exception for this!

I think I'm losing the plot. Flossy is off her food today, so I have baked her favourite lemon sponge cake. She stuffed her beak like a musket and is now sleeping it off.

House chicken

Some time ago (I can't find the post) someone asked about having a chicken as a house pet. I replied saying it wasn't a good idea, for various reasons. Last week when the temperatures here dropped well below freezing, we brought our last, lonely and aged (9) girl to live in the kitchen. She's been a...

Re: Leeks

We've suffered terribly from leaf miner in the past few years and now only grow Sprintan. They grow so fast they can be planted out and harvested between leek miner activity. I planted out at the end of April and harvested a crop of massive leeks two weeks ago, which are now safe and frozen. I had p...

Re: recommendations for blight resistant outdoor tomatoes

Hi Arnie, Suttons were selling Crimson Plum tomato plants this year. I've not tried them, but the seeds I buy each year for Crimson Crush and Crimson Blush have produced plants that shrugged off blight in the past. I'm trying Crimson Cherry this year too and all good so far.
