Re: soup making

I made celeriac soup this weekend - celeriac, potatoes and mustard as the main ingredients with the usual base of stock and vegetables, plus a drop of milk or cream. It was gorgeous.

Re: Any regular bread bakers ?

My husband bakes bread regularly though not as often as he did as he's on limited carbs and I (who am not on such limitations) work away from home during the week. I used to use a Panasonic bread maker but he prefers to make it by hand from scratch and i have to say the results are much better.

Re: My latest favourite recipe book

I like Nigel Slater's writing too and have all of his books and follow him on line. My other current fan is Ottolenghi as his salads are amazing and I love his books. Tom Kerridge's recipes are full of flavour and based on really simple ingredients. Galton Blackiston, Michael Caines, Nathan Outlaw a...

Re: soup making

We make two types of soup - fridge soup and specific soup. Fridge soup is what you might think - leftovers. They're always good if unpredictable. Usually carrot or pea based. The others are more designer soups - today I have made cream of chicken soup and mushroom and mustard soup. Both are great an...

Re: Planter suggestions?

You could also underplant it with crops such as radish, short carrots, cut and come again lettuce, soft herbs and any mini veg (turnips, beetroot, kohlrabi, etc.).

I'm a big fan of Tom Kerridge's recipes at the moment - although they don't overtake the love of my life James' of course.

Re: Happy Birthday Tigger,

I'm so sorry I'm so late in replying. Some of you will know that I've had a bit of a tough year. Last Christmas Eve I was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of cancer and my odds of survival were pretty poor. They didn't think I would make it through to the summer. I had extensive surgery follow...

Re: soup making

I love soup. I think it's the Irish in me. It needs a few core ingredients - onions, butter, olive or rape seed oil, sherry, potatoes and good stock. Then the rest depends on what type of broth you're looking for - a creamy soup, a chunky one, meat or fish based soup, clear stock/Jewish chicken vers...

Re: Home grown cucumbers

I would agree. Mini cucumbers and full size ones are one of those vegetables that feature alongside broad beans, peas and tomatoes (which are a fruit, I know) that have an exceptional taste when home grown.

I love mini cues. We've had at least 40 from 3 grafted plants so far this year.

Re: I can't take this dog anywhere.

Our Brittany - Georgia - is 2. She spent the first year of her life with our other Brittany and they were inseparable. However Georgia's energy was Sigé's demise and she went to meet her maker last summer. Georgia spent weeks looking for her, stopped eating, sleeping or growing. Having been used to ...

Re: onions

Just a word of advice - make sure you feed them. We've had great onions for the past few years but I think it's all due to nourishment.
