steamer
Sorry Happymouse, if I didn't sound very enthusiastic but it is one of those gadgets that has been put to the back of the cupboard. Having tried mine I still prefer my old fashioned steamer on the stove. I found it took longer to clean etc. it took up work-top space I am short of and I had a kitchen...

Association funds
We support local events such as the Michaelmas Fayre and provide a stall selling produce, jams and pickles, plants etc. donated by our members. We always sell out.
I produced an allotment calendar for 2006. £1. from each one sold went to the Associations funds. raised £204.

My Red Arrow is very slow to crop this year. I can only put it down to the weather and lack of rain.

pickled onions
choose even sized onions - peel and immerse in brine for at least 12 hours - 4 oz coarse salt to 2 pints water.
Rinse - drain well. Pack into jars, cover with cold spiced vinegar. Seal jars.
Keep for 2-3 months before opening.

[b] I'm growing 'Red Arrow'which I have grown for the last 5-6 years. Previously it has always started to produce spears in abundance by now but this year it is very slow. I have not had any pickings yet. I can only put it down to lack of rain and the exceptional weather. Be patient, unless you need...

carrots in raised beds
I don't sow carrots in rows, I just broadcast the seed to fit the area I am covering with a fleece tunnel. No thinning required and a much bigger crop.

potatoes in raised beds
On my raised beds I take out a trench a good spades depth, add a layer of rotted compost, place the potatoes on top, fill in. I earth up once when the tops begin to show then add a thick mulch of compost, grass clippings etc. making sure they have been well watered first. Raised beds tend to dry out...
