Yes, I can second that too. I find it very effective for all brassicas.

I agree Alan, bright colours are best.
I have only seen yellow ones - common sense not to use green I would think.

Not so sure a clothes peg is any better than the cane. Why not invest in a few cane caps (cheap to buy) or save your empty vitamin pots with a little bit of blue tack inside to hold secure.

black fruitlets on pears.
Many thanks for your advice Herbaceous. I will have another look. The fruitlets so far have not dropped off but when I take them off they are completely black inside and all squashy and yuky almost liquid. No sign of any bugs that I can see. I will remove all of them and try not to let any fall and ...

black fruitlets on pears.
I have 2 Williams Pears. The blossom was fantastic this year and loads of fruitlets have set. Now however many of them are turning black and rotting. I can't see any bugs inside.
Any ideas what can be causing this and what can I do to prevent it happening again next year.
Thanks

Oh come on guys - at least they have re-scheduled it for us, which is what we all wanted.
Live or recorded - can't please everyone all of the time - just some of us some of the time.

fox cubs
Just a word of warning. This time of the year if you have young fox cubs on your plot. Please be careful not to leave the large square pea/bean netting lying around. Sadly one was found on our site, strangled - not a pleasant sight. I know they can be a nuisance but please keep you netting out of ha...

grass clippings
I use grass clippings as a mulch for potatoes.
Earth up first, wait for it to rain and get a good soaking then fill the trench with grass clippings and anything else to hand. Compost, rotted manure etc. It all rots down and gets turned in when you harvest the spuds.

Hi Sally, Interested to see you comments on Butternut and Turks Turban. I grow both of these each year but this year, having sown 3 times so far and got nothing. The seeds have just 'disappeared' in the pot. No sign at all of rotting. Any ideas? I shall have to buy another packet and try again. Rega...

growbags
Jude, the ones I saw at Focus were more than twice the regular size. A new thing they have brought out. Much deeper to allow the roots to spread.
If you use grobags worth considering.

growbags
I was in Focus today, they had large double size growbags by Levingtons I think the price was £4.49.
I bit pricey but I was impressed. Not sure of the capacity but they looked very large compared with another one for £1.20.
