Re: Asparaus

Asparagus, pea and leek risotto is good too. You can also add mushrooms or a mixture of fish or shell fish. Finished off with marscaponi rather than butter or cream. Definitely no parmesan if you add fish. As you would expect - al la James Martin.

Re: I would like to plant an orchard.

We planted ours about 15 years ago but have added to it since. Think about using dwarf stock as it's easier to pick when you're older and don't wan't to be stranded up a ladder! We're big fans of Trees for Life at Frank P Matthews. Fabulous quality at great prices and you can order a year in advance...

New Year Resolution!

Happy New Year. I'm sorry I haven't been about for the last few months. Work has taken up pretty much all of my time and I've been spending at least one day a week in London doing national stuff, the PM's dementia challenge and various other things. I can't say I like getting the 6am train but that'...

Re: Two new cook books!!

l'm ashamed to say I have walls of them! Every James Martin one - of course, several signed Ottolenghi, Nigel Slater, Jamie, Denis Cotter, Delia, Paul Hollywood, Bertinet, the Roux gang and so on. I've also got lots about Indian food, my favourites being by Atul Kochhar who's bringing out a new one ...

Re: Wild Garlic

We let it roam wild at the bottom of our orchard, at the edge of our brook and in the margins. It is a pungent but gorgeous smell and I wouldn't say it was in anyway undesirable.

As for taste - it's like garlicky spring onions with garlic chives as an extra.

Re: Asparagus Problem

We've lost a whole bed of asparagus this year. The one planted next door at the same time is fine and the third one we put in a year ago isn't in bad shape, so who knows why we've got a problem with a well established lot of asparagus.

Re: Lowest temperature for outdoor beans

We've had a frost nip of our broad beans this week, but we're hoping they will survive. Got lots of others sown just in case but we'll lose our earlies if they succumb.

Re: What has everyone started off?

Yesterday's sunshine finally spurred me on to get started, so onion sets now in modules, spring onions, lettuces, peas and broad beans sown. Now we just have to keep the mice away from them!
