Re: Removing all taste from apples... and tomatoes

There are some amazing tasty things in the fruit sections. What can compete with Pineapples, cheaper than four Apples and provide at least four good helpings. Don't know how we get them for the silly prices (probably don't want to know really), they used to be exotic. Just before Christmas here the...

Re: Cats!

Thanks Westi. They were part of a litter of 3 I took in from a cat shelter that was in an appalling state. I mean the cat shelter was appalling and it was also the regional SPCA ..They came equipped with feline enteritis caught there and though I got them all through that the 3rd who was short haire...

Re: Removing all taste from apples... and tomatoes

I have a very vivid memory from around 50 years ago, of a visit in Guernsey to a greenhouse for flowers when the owner reached up with a pair of scissors and cut us a bunch of grapes, warm from the sun. ... they tasted like nothing before or since. Must stop reading this thread as I start wanting th...

Re: Welcome Spring, Bits and Bobs.

Today and yesterday I are mostly bin doing this. Pa Snip these are my raised beds and bank supports, with my topup of Homebase topsoil £30 and some replacement strawberries. Perfectly fit for purpose they are as well. Once upon a time I would have been easily able to lay my hands on similar, but dr...

Re: Cats!

Westi you are awesome... here in Ireland the feral population is appalling and disease ridden. At least my five are safe... but i have put up the HOUSE FULL sign...This first photo is the ankle loving stray who arrived three years ago. He had obviously been handled so I think someone dumped him up h...

Re: How are your seedlings doing?

Forgot to bring the two trays of broad beans in last night but thankfully there was no frost so they are fine. Sweet blessed rain has washed the air clean of filth. As soon as I stop coughing after the dratted slurry will start digging maybe.

Cats!

When the world is dark and hard, there are always cats to comfort.. Somehow I now have FIVE, all rescues as cats are neglected here in Ireland and the feral population would ache the heart.. I used to breed Siamese then when I moved to ireland decided to put back into the system and give homes to ne...

Re: Removing all taste from apples... and tomatoes

I agree with the thoughts about food being picked under ripe so that it can be held in a suspended state whilst travelling to the country it is being consumed in. Concept of taste is indeed a individual thing. During the last 12 months my taste buds have varied from what I would call good to virtua...

Re: How are your seedlings doing?

Marigold Is the slurry something you could purloin bucket loads of and use on your plot. Nice idea but if you smelled this stuff! Fresh from the slurry pit the cattle have been filling while inside and would scorch the air from you. Methane gas..The air is still putrid as no wind. Last year they du...

Re: How are your seedlings doing?

Hopes of digging yesterday again foiled; the huge gorse fires were out but the dreaded slurry spreading was in progress up here a few feet from my front door and the air was putrid. Not quite as bad this morning and looking forward to kindly rain later this week. Small patch I have so it will wait a...

Re: Removing all taste from apples... and tomatoes

ah, taste... we had a lecture on taste, which devolved into a 3 hour 'debate' (academic word for argument ) on what taste is ah the memories... Food preference is a funny thing, that's for sure... More wisdom and truth! So individual.... And dependent also on health issues an eg meds. Sinus problem...

Re: Removing all taste from apples... and tomatoes

Remembering my decade on an Outer Northern Orkney isle; winter vegetables consisted of cabbage and neeps, that grew more battered looking as winter drew on. Only we incomers grew more ambitious crops like peas and froze them; they had only had electricity a few years and the gales were too ferocious...
