"the cat did it!"

So last week in a harsh northerly gale, I am trying to close the back door against the wind, and one of the cats decides she wants out.. Not allowed this one, so I bend down fast to arrest here, And the door slams, banging the handle on my eyebrow. OUCH! And a huge egg comes up.. so cold compress ti...

Re: Stone shortage

Reminds me of when I started gardening up in Orkney... was not just stones but all kinds of broken china and once even a carpet, When there was no rubbish collection. Here in Ireland I expected that and sure enough.. chief trophy was a full set of dentures.. and the teapot spout made me all but weep...

Re: Does weedkiller really kill twitch?

re covering.. not twitch but worked on nettles and reeds. When I had the polytunnel years ago it was erected on a neglected field. The gardening place who put it up told me not to disturb the soil but to cover with cardboard, compost etc. After two years all the roots were almost on the surface, see...

Re: Welcome Spring, Bits and Bobs.

You are all so busy! The bad weather here has made any attempt at gardening impossible; yesterday saw SNOW and a gale. Serious flooding in Cork and Kerry and high roads impassable with snow ..Bitter cold and temps in the low singles. Only life out there is the dandelions in the path. ....Still they a...

Re: Of Easter Eggs...

Happy Easter to everybody. Not that it really affects me much but the sooner they fix this holiday to a sensible time the better. I can't find out when they used to celebrate Ēostre but I'm pretty sure it was in April. Where would you put it? Monday and Tuesday after the first or second Sunday in A...

Re: Of Easter Eggs...

I must say that I agree with you Geoff. I don't know what day it is most of the time now I've retired and we've no children in the family yet to fit ourselves round school terms etc. So movable holidays mess things up even more. It's a lovely day for gardening anyway, I don't need much excuse for e...

Of Easter Eggs...

Well, HAPPY EASTER everyone! I claim the award for the best bargain in eggs.. Apart from the free range brown eggs I was given at the Traditional Farms, I bought a plethora of Cadbury's Creme Eggs in Dunnes. Dunnes is our Irish chain store; food and clothing etc... They are or were selling boxes of ...

Re: Early Easter Gardening Plans ?

Stormy noisy night..Went out to let the dog out and nearly blown off my feet. Well, saves having a shower! The Dawn Masses were timed for 6 am and I am sure they forgot to take the time change into account. My nearest was too far away and not in this weather. Dublin will be a wet event today. All fi...

Re: Oh DEAR!

In Spain they used to throw a dead chicken in the septic tank when it starts to smell, these days you can get sachets of chemicals that do the same job What a waste of a chicken! Thankfully the tank here i far enough from the house that there would be no smell.. one advantage of being out in the bo...

Re: Oh DEAR!

Marigold, don't be putting too many chemicals down there, it can kill off the bugs, beasties and fungi that digest the effluent and keep it smelling sweet rather than rank. The old cure of a rank septic tank was to obtain a cowpat, one that holds together like an upside down flan, with a moist and ...

Re: Oh DEAR!

Can't resist telling the tale of the Spanish waiter working in an Irish hotel. He kept using the term 'manana' and when the owner asked him what it meant he just shrugged, replied "tomorrow", and then asked the Irishman if they had a word in gaelic which meant the same? Yes, the owner rep...
