Re: Biggest pest yet.
Hi again Gerry There is a lot on Google about this one. The law seems to vary a bit so make sure you are checking English law. Found this: To avoid liability under the common law, the farmer must have taken reasonable care to prevent the animal straying which would involve steps such as ensuring all...

Re: Biggest pest yet.
Hi Gerry Sorry to hear about your trouble. My understanding is that anyone who keeps livestock is responsible for keeping them in the field. If they escape then you can claim against them for any damage that's caused. It looks as though you will be faced with a lot of expense in putting things right...

Re: Eggstreme Action
Hi Pa snip Check the remains of the egg. Is she laying soft shelled eggs - these break very easily after they've been layed and then they get eaten. Some suggest old egg shells with mustard in them for curing this habit. As others have said though the only answer may to dispatch her - it can be a di...

Re: Pea pod problem
Hello again MrC The leaves are quite normal. This is a natural marking that develops of pea leaves as they get older bit like the silvery markings on courgette leaves. It is the pods that may have been scorched. There is not a lot to worry about really. It is the way of peas and beans to carry on gr...

Re: Pea pod problem
Hello MrC
This could simply be scorching caused by high temperatures in your tunnel.
Peas prefer cool growing conditions from now on temperatures can rises rapidly under plastic or glass unless you are careful with your ventilation.

Re: Favourite books?
OH's book is certainly a very good read. He even reveals his real name at the end - sorry no spoliers here. Another excellent read for us gardeners is 'Digging for Victory Wartime Gardening with Mr Middleton'. Its full of garden wisdom and I love all his old remedies such as calomel, soot, tar-oil w...

Re: Rhubarb-rhubarb-rhubarb.
There is always a lot of confusion over rhubarb treatment. Forcing involves digging up the roots in late autumn, exposing them to cold hopefully frost then moving into warm dark sheds to grow on and produce a very early crop. What most of us do on our plots is to cover the crowns in early spring to ...

Re: Potato shoots have caught a frost, what to do?
Hello DW I would suggest the 'do nothing' approach'. Just regard this as a bit of a set back. They will recover quickly and new leaves/shoots will soon take over. Your crop will just be a bit later than you might have expected. Be ready with some fleece to throw over them at night if any more frosts...

Hi Barry
I came across something similar in my patch a few years ago. My guess after some wary feeling around was that it was the abandoned work of rabbits. The females make chambers for their young.

Re: Removing all taste from apples... and tomatoes
Hi Barry I think the taste problem starts when the shop fruit is harvested. It seems to be picked before it has fully ripened in the forlorn hope that it will continue to ripen on its journey via wholesaler, distribution centre then finally to its shelf in the supersheds. The outer skin colours up n...

Beware SPAM from KG
Beware I have just started getting SPAM emails from KG, probably not directly. They only have a few words so I guess the spammers are just testing if the addresses are valid. I use unique email addresses for KG so there is no doubt where they have come from. Looks to me as though someone has hacked ...

I see we have a date for this nonsense now.
That's good - I do the bookings for our local hall so that will bring a nice £100 - polling station - for the hall funds.

I guess this referendum nonsense will just go on and on.
We will keep having referendums until will give the government the answer it wants ie the correct answer - just like in Ireland 2008 and 9.

Re: New year Bits and Bobs.
Congratulations to your niece. OH have you forgotten your biography is already out there - now back in print. Published around 1950 so that gives us an idea of just how old and wise you really are! Its a great read and I thoroughly recommend it. Maybe it is time for your niece to bring things up to ...
