Re: Merry Tiller.
The tools and machinery section seems to have gone a bit quiet, so I don't check it as often as I used to, oddly enough my last "look" must have been just before you posted. Anyway, Wolseley recommended cloth covered belts for Merry Tillers, but Webb chose raw edge, notched, when they came...

Re: Surging Suffolk Punch Lawnmower
Usually this is due to the fuel/air mixture being wrong. Can be the choke, either it needs more, or less, for a while after starting. Or it can be some dirt in a jet, partially blocking it. If it runs better on part choke once warm, it will be dirt. When I had a Suffolk with adjustable jets, I somet...

Re: Merry Tiller engine overhaul or replacement
I have used US made Merry Tillers with both the GX160 engine and the B & S Intec 800 engines and they are OK, but the extra weight makes them less manouverable. That 3hp side valve was one of the lightest for it's power that you could get. The 5hp side valve Majors too are just that bit heavier....

Re: Merry Tiller engine overhaul or replacement
The engine is a 3hp, 8 cubic inch unit. What is the problem with it? Although modern replacements fit, there is often something like the belt guard or throttle cable that doesn't quite fit with a new engine. If you do go for new, it will need the 3/4" dia keyed crankshaft so the pulley will fit.

Re: What Oil?
Wolseley recommended SAE40 oil for the chaincase and SAE30 for the engine. I have been using SAE 20/50 multigrade in both, for years. MacKissic, who now make Merry Tillers, recommend 00 grade grease in the chaincase, which is almost identical to the one on the early Major. This isn't grease though, ...

Re: Suffolk Punch 35s Service
Looks like the dreaded Dell-Orto FHC20, you should find lots on the net about how useless they were, not quite true as their only fault was to fit a fixed main jet, an adjustable one was available, but not fitted by Qualcast. That little screw on the bottom of the float bowl is something I haven't s...

Re: Merry Tiller Titan
To use the original set up you would need the special nut. This seems to have been a Wolseley idea as B & S gave three options of how to fit a "remote" throttle assembly and connecting the inner cable to that vertical rod wasn't one of them. As your chances of finding the nut are rare,...

Re: I just have to tell someone.
My father had one of those converted horse drawn rollers back in the 1960s. Originally the wooden shafts were fitted directly to the wooden deck and a seat would probably have been on top of the platform. When tractors took over on hill farms in the 1950s, local blacksmiths were employed to make up ...

Re: Qualcast Classic 35s running problems
I don't know how I missed this in 2014 but recon I had answered it in another post anyway. However at over 1000 viewings, some owners must still be looking for answers. If the machine has been running happily and then starts to "only run on choke," this indicates the carb has got some dirt...

Re: Suffolk Punch 43s Throttle not working
Here are a couple of parts drawings from the Qualcast B66 rotavator parts book, this used the same A114 engine and DelOrto carburettor, note that there is a hair-pin spring (item 13) on the throttle butterfly.

Re: 3d printing garden tools?
There are lots of different 3D printers now. The “domestic” ones use a table onto which a nozzle extrudes a bead of molten plastic. This builds up the shape of the object required from a computer design. Industrial types can use the same idea with a bead of weld to make steel parts, though they are ...

Re: Merry tiller No 2.
No, the back out reverse was used on front fuel tank Majors and Professionals. When Wolseley brought out the rear tank engined models they came up with the disc rubbing the chaincase pulley idea. To confuse matters further both the US maker and Webb started to use another reverse set up after yours,...

Re: Merry tiller No 2.
No, I think what you have is what is left of a reverse accessory. When the friction disc gets worn it doesn't engage properly and is ireplacable so the previous owner may have removed the arm etc. Also the belts are no longer available under the part number EC.0517A1 so you need to take the old belt...
