First earlies

Why is it that the majority of first earlies tend to be white and not red?

Eventually got through to Thames Water and was told we can use hosepipes to fill water butts, but have to distribute the water with watering cans!

Thanks for all your comments. The real problem when you have a thief on the allotment is to catch them and, usually, they are very clever and do it at a time when nobody is around. This individual will often turn up in his car and leave five minutes later if somebody is around only to return at dusk...

Three plots have now had potatoes stolen. It is obviously an inside job too, since the thief knows exactly which plants to lift and which to leave alone. Grim, isn't it?

Have just barracaded the bed under attack from the thief with tons of chicken wire, fishing net and concrete slabs. I had to do something. I hate feeling frustrated! Still interested in info about the camera, tho!

Thanks for your input. the problem with most of these cameras is that you appear to have to plug in a monitor close by in order to pick up live feed. What we would need is a camera that can store information on a chip and be battery powered. Anybody know one of them?
Thanks.

Tried to phone Thames Water, who have the cheek to have an 0845 (charge what you like and call it a local tarriff line)number to handle enquiries. Couldn't get through, of course, and was kept hanging on for ages for absolutely nothing. Remain disgusted with Thames, all of whose operatives were obvi...

Are you stealing my potatoes?

No, it isn't you, but I do know who it is and want to catch him. Regretfully, one of my fellow allotment holders is helping himself to my nice new potatoes when nobody else is around. The problem is in catching this person. I staked the plot out tonight, watching this guy arrive at 9pm and leaving j...

The web site says you can fill containers (watering cans, buckets), but makes no reference to filling water butts whose water you can then use for putting into watering cans!!

Filling water butts with hosepipes

In the Thames Water area we currently have a hosepipe ban. However, somebody today tried to convince me that it is OK to use hosepipes to fill up water butts. Can anybody tell me if that is true or not?
Thanks

Things safe to burn

At our allotment, we discourage the burning of anything that is not organic (paper, wood, plants) in nature. However, somebody told me today that it is safe to burn plastics and the like on allotment fires if a high enough level of heat can be generated, which he claimed was possible in an ordinary ...

New potatoes

Dug up my first new potatoes at the weekend. They were the size of hen's eggs and were delicious! Vales Emerald was the variety; not one I had grown before. The remarkable things was that they were planted on March 21 and took about 11 weeks to get to a size where they were worth harvesting. I grew ...

Chez,
That looks to me that anybody in the UK using paraquat in any substance after the end of April this year is breaking the law. Is that how you see it?
