Gloworm, we had an elderly gent on site a few years ago who had given up growing and just used his plot to feed foxes, this was at one end and I am at the middle. Until I found out what he was doing I could not understand why I kept on digging up pieces of meat from my plot. It was the foxes cachein...

Book that might help alot.
Catbud, I thoroughly recommend the RHS book "The Vegetable Garden Displayed" published by the RHS, now out of print but available via Amazon from £5.95. It covers all the basics with pictures, but some information especially about spraying is out of date. There is also "The Fruit Gard...

Catbud, hi. Earthing up is the practice of drawing loose earth up around the plant. With potatoes there are various ways of planting, using bulb planters or trenches, but the most basic description is as follows. Make a shallow trench in well cultivated soil. Lay your potatoes at appropriate spacing...

Rhubarb space needed?
What is the correct spacing for Rhubarb? I would like the definative answer on this before I advise one of our in-experienced newbies, who has just planted thirty Rhubarb plants on his plot, two fifteen foot rows, plants one foot apart, rows one foot apart. I thought at least three foot from anythin...

An alternative protector
Mow the lawn or allotment path and collect the grass. After earthing up sprinkle the grass, as thickly as you please, along the ridges to achieve a light fleece effect. When the potato shoots come through they push this lightweight "thatch" up from underneath and it acts as a biodegradable...

Passion Flower, dead?
Last year I planted a Passion Flower against the fence at the bottom of my garden.
Tidying the flower bed this weekend it seems dead to the ground, with the bark flaking off.
Is this the usual behaviour?
Is it beyond redemption?
What should I do with it?

Sex Change Chicken
Todays Daily Mail carries the story of a 14 Month Wyandotte that spontaneously changed sex from Hen to Cock. I had never heard of this, but Adrian Kemp, Secretary of the National Federation of Poultry Clubs is quoted as saying this happens very rarely "I've only seen it once in 55 years". ...
