Re: Foraging
Acorns have to be rinsed to remove some of the tannins, but you can make flour from them, I carry a book called "food for free" written by Richard Mabey, it's a small Collins book that fits in your pocket and is a great guide. I have tapped our Birch tree and tried the sap, full of vitamin...

Re: What are you going to use when peat is gone ?
Most of the popular peat free are buying garden waste from council tips apparently, hence the variable quality, I bought one that was coir based with added clay, this was better than I thought it would be, but did run out of steam after a bit, so added fertilisers seem to be the way to go. I intend ...

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs.
I only stepped out of the house to feed the birds, fill the coal bucket, I was going to put the ashes in the bin, but the wind blew them away before I took the 4 steps to said bin, oh well.

There are one or two wh...

Redwings have been here a while and I saw my first fieldfares yesterday, so they'll be on their way ciderboys, keeping an eye out for waxwings too, we had some grey phalaropes blown over in the storm, proper lost their way they had.

Re: Grapes
Over the years I've picked up all sorts of information(mostly useless :D ) but when I was a moderator on another gardening forum I picked up a lot of sources of good info when I didn't know myself what the likely answer was, I kept all the links on my computer, sadly I now have a new computer so los...

Re: Grapes
Never grown them, but I well remember the advice of burying a dead sheep under a vine, never sure if this was a wind up or not and I have also heard of putting wool round them, but again no idea why. Funnily enough the RHS don't mention sheep at all lol https://www.rhs.org.uk/fruit/grapes/grow-your-...

Rains stopped and the winds dropped, don't have to worry about the roof coming off tonight, to be fair this wee bungalow seems to be a toughie.
