Really no such thing as a free lunch

Went shopping at my local big supermarket (mentioning no names, but every little helps...) While I was putting my shopping through the checkout, the supervisor was nagging the till guy about attending the staff Christmas lunch, but he was adamant he was not going. The supervisor eventually gave up a...

Re Christmas cracker issue - I think I've worked it out OH.

Find a young sapling tree at one of your gardening jobs. Bend it down and secure. Tie one end of the cracker to top of trunk. Grasp other end. Use sharp knife to sever string and bob's your wotsit

Hi Sally. Point taken, but I get round this by using an old kitchen knife to cut big chunks or slices of Oasis and then I put a few bits in the bottom third of my containers. It does as good a job as expensive water gel and is easy to pick out when you are done. I have been known to dry it out and r...

It's not exactly natural material, but another good one is to break up Oasis (the green flower arranging foam) to add to compost instead of water reating gel.

I'd have to agree with Mole. I tried a battery one to keep cats off my raised veg beds, but it ate batteries and did not seem to bother the cats one little bit :(

Hello Essexboy I have a quince that grew in a large half oak barrel for the first 3 years of it's life. As I was pushed for space I pruned it very hard every year, clearing the centre and encouraging a classic goblet shape with lots of fruiting spurs. Year 1 - nought, year 2 got 1 quince, year 3 got...

If you want to stick to non-chemical methods, try a soap spray Primrose. You can spray it on quite thickly, so it runs down the inside of the leaves and gets as many as possible. You probably already know this, but just in case...prep the leeks by splitting them lengthways down 1 side and soaking up...

Hi Malk. I don't think you have done anything wrong in the freezing\unfreezing process to cause this. The toughness of the outer skin usually depends on the size of the beans - the more mature they get, the more formed the seed coat is. I don't like the skins much either, so if I grow broad beans, I...

I struggle with carrots as my soil is on the heavy side. The allotment is a dead loss, but have had success in a raised bed at home by spreading the seed on the surface and covering with a fine layer of silver sand. It holds the seed in place but is much more free draining than compost. Monika's tip...

I don't think overwintering will work with sugarsnaps Vivienz, but you can start your seeds in the greenhouse early next spring ahead of the outdoor sowings. It cuts a good few weeks off the time to harvest and a big pot full yields a surprising amount. I do these and dwarf french beans and they are...
