Re: Mid-summer Bits and Bobs

First year in the greenhouse and a new house with garden. Such a difference compared to the balcony I was living on hot summer days at 43 celcius. Looks like this experimental greenhouse and garden year was great so far. Those results fill me up with so much joy Kiwanos, melons, cucumbers... Screens...

Re: Kiwano (horned melon)

Pretty sure the start is always hard, as we have to start early to be having fruits by the end of the year. It has not as much to do with having the right temperature as it has with not having long lasting summers. Mine looked very pathetic in the beginning as well, but now they're thriving and taki...

Re: Mid-summer Bits and Bobs

Had one huge mutation tomato growing. Just left it there to see how it grows, but turns out it was not a single tomato. There were two of them and inbetween was nothing but mold. It also started cracking on all sides and I got rid of it. Luckily there's plenty of normal ones growing 20200711_115741....

Re: Mid-summer Bits and Bobs

not sure that's even doable without owning a huge lot of land Most of us have almost completely empty and flat rooftops, just hinting here The rental houses here don't allow anything to be placed on rooftops, mostly because it's dangerous. But if you've bought a house yourself, why wouldn't you? It...

Re: Kiwano (horned melon)

Thanks for keeping kiwano updates going, I have been too busy lately. Mine are growing out of proportions, just as predicted! Also got a few outdoors in containers. I love how limited space can be used so efficiently but I would prefer having a nice large plot where I can let them creep around like ...

Alpine strawberries it is!

Arugola is nice but only stays for a few weeks/months. Alpine strawberries come back each year :)

Re: potatoes

I cannot remember how many weeks it was but they were planted between early and middle of april. They are a typical Dutch variety called Frieslanders, does anyone know them?

Ground covering plants...

What are some (not annual) ground covering plants that stay very low and I can plant under my berry bushes? They have to prevent weeds. Preferably an edible ground cover and not an annual, but any plant will do.

Re: potatoes

Are potatoes ready to harvest when the plants are turning yellow? Mine are in a large potato growing bag and tipping over.

Re: Mid-summer Bits and Bobs

That looks a pretty effective first attempt for your greenhouse Elmigo. Not sure about the numbe r of fruit you might harvest but I suspect If want them to grow to a reasonable size you might have to let some of your babies go ! Or do youhave some extra manure you can place around the root area? I ...

Re: Mid-summer Bits and Bobs

We had so much rain! But now a new period of drought is predicted especially for the month August. Despite all the rain, plants inside the greenhouse are staying dry but still enjoy the benefits of rain water dripping through the ground below. The first santa claus melon is showing up, I love them! ...
