Re: The DIG game. DESERT ISLAND GARDENER
I thought I had it sussed and was about to suggest the islands of Tean, St. Helens or Samson, all part of the Isles of Scilly. All of which have remains of early Christian places of worship. Were inhabited up to the mid 1800's. Stone is granite and colonies of seals live off shore. Possibility of gr...

Re: Greenhouse ventilation for tomatoes
Years ago Kitchen Garden ran an article about an Italian gentleman who had an allotment in the London area. He was intent on growing Italian vegitables, including tomatoes, which he grew most successfuly under a polly roof held up by poles and no sides at all. I grow my tomatoes in a pollytunnel whi...

Re: The DIG game. DESERT ISLAND GARDENER
Looked for the potatoes yesterday but was informed that they were leaving Scotland today. Perhaps Tigerbuenie can give them a shove. I presume they will be Golden Wonder (for making crisps) and the salt will have soaked into them. Northern hemisphere Ireland, sorry, island, as the warmest part is in...

Re: Greenhouse disinfection/tomato leaf mould
Regarding the EU ban on the use of Jeyes Fluid for soil sterilisation, as John Boy has pointed out on numerous occasions, the EU bans on a lot of things is brought about simply because the manufacturer refuses to pay the extortionate EU licencing fees. Now I don't know if this is the case with Jeyes...

Re: Slugs and snails
I have found that Scotts Slug Clear is very good on ornamental, non edible, plants. But of course it must not be used on edible plants, or ground which is to be used for growing edible plants. I had a thought that perhaps if I designated an area in my veg garden for a plant (like Hosta) which is par...

Re: Best First Early Potatoes?
First Early I grow Sharpe's Express but my favourite potato is a second early "British Queen". It is floury and needs steaming in its skin. The flavour is marvelous, I think it's Irelands favourite potato.

Hi Mr-cecil,
For the past ten years I have used Jeyes Fluid and the plastic is still good. It hasn't suffered any deteriation at all.

Gerry.

Re: shop garlic growing?
Hi Diane, I always grow garlic in the tunnel and it's OK. However the bottom 2'6" of my tunnel is net. Monty also said that the lack of cold prevented the division. As has been said many times on here "Where is the commercial garlic grown?" In countries much hotter than ours. So Monty...

Re: Biggest pest yet.
Thanks everyone, Pa, do you think I should offer to pay the farmer The cows were being driven along the road. On my entrance there is a cattle grid and also a spring wire which the farmer should put across when moving cattle. The cows came across the grid (they are well used to walking on grating th...

Biggest pest yet.
This morning I looked out of my window to find a herd of just short of 200, yes two hundred, cows in my garden. They were only in there for a few minutes before the neighbouring farmer chased them out, but the lawn is in a right mess and the borders are pretty bad too, but funnily enough, not as bad...
