Cost of seed potatoes

We have just got 2.5K bags of T&M seed potatoes in at work and they are just over £4. I was a bit shocked because you usually see Taylors garden centre bags at 3K for £3.99 I know the weather last year proably did not help but most seed stock is grown in bonny Scotland which faired OK I thought ...

Hi Rooster - welcome to the forum. I've got a decent sized garden with an 8 foot by 6 foot greenhouse, raised veg beds and 7 bantams. I also have 2 allotments, which I share with my other half. We are both ex-office bods who decided to re-train 5 years ago. I did 1 day a week at college for 2 years ...

Good advice Geoff and that last heading hit a chord with me - guilty as charged It is not so easy and a spell of bad weather holding things back means all your careful sucessional sowings end up catching up with one another. For mixed areas where a crop rotation is not so clear cut, I tend to use th...

HI GCG. You could just about still get away with garlic, but that needs a few weeks of cold so leave it outside in pots to chill, before planting out. You could also try broad beans and early peas in your loo roll middles. Just check the packets for varieties that say sow October or January. I alway...

If your sorrel does run to seed Primrose, make sure you cut the flower heads off, or you will have a garden full of the stuff. It also keeps it producing nice young leaves instead of coarse huge ones if you keep the plant well cut back. Can't remember if you have chickens or not, but if you do, they...

Nearly had a nasty moment with the lunch when I messed my timings up and it seemed it would have to be served in instalments Had to take some things out of the oven and wait for the rest to catch up, then bung everything back in to heat through. Anyway was OK in the end. Must remember not to open th...

Never let it be said you were backwards in coming forwards Herby. The first of many for you no doubt I served a lady at work today who was buying 4 identical gifts on behalf of her 95 year old father for his 4 lady friends. What a trooper If you did not live so far away, I would have suspected it wa...

Happy Christmas

Can't make the party tomorrow, so best wishes everyone. Have a good time and if the weather means you can't get out there, curl up with the seed catalogues and dream of next year :D

Hi Mandylew. Leaves will take at least a year to rot in a leaf mould bin (or bag) and longer just spread on the ground, so don't use then as a mulch if you want them gone by next spring. They rot by fungal action so it is a lot slower than composting green waste.

Hope that helps.

Good Luck Happymouse, but don't worry too much. My father-in-law has had both eyes done now for cataracts and glaucoma as well. He never goes to the doctor and is really anti any medical treatment, but he was forced to give in on this one. He said it was a breeze and so worthwhile he doesn't know wh...
