Tomato Seeds

I've collected my KG1 seeds to share with you all. Had them in the bottle and now strained & drying off for 4 days. They still feel soft though, how long does it take for them to dry into hard seeds? They are really tiny seeds so was 5 days in the water too much? It took that long for the mouldy...

Re: Early Autumn Bits and Bobs - 2016.

I cleared the KG1 tomatoes today, but managed another 3 bowls full from what was left, which are all firm & fine but the branches were literally sticks. Looked nice and clear with the dropped toms swept up, but it feels like the closure of the season. I've still got some new seedlings that have ...

Re: Is vegetable grow an art or simply a hobby?

Good to see you back Pa! How's the compost going? Was thinking of you when my pallet compost heap collapsed and my neighbour noted my fine compost at the lower levels. Now I was not planning on using it as it has got invaded with all sorts of weeds and stuff from the plot next door having been negle...

Re: When do you harvest pears

I agree PP, if they come off easily they are inevitably too ready. I now go by size & actually find I have to snip them off or I take 1/2 the branch as well if I tug sometimes. Another sure sign is the activity of the wasps increases, also a good sign the fruit is getting close to ripening. Westi

Re: New varieties for a new year!

I was wrong about the frilly sprouts, plant second from the end had some today. Had to release my artwork of netting to weed & clear dropped leaves and there they were, only on this one plant with them ready. Been there a while as some had even blown but I had missed them, but can still salvage ...

It's fine JB, it's 'general chatter', that what happens when you chat, you move from topic to topic within a topic, same as a chat on the corner with a neighbour!

Re: Is vegetable grow an art or simply a hobby?

Maybe growing the mega huge veg is a sort of an art, translates into lots of preparation (sketching), selecting (light, composition/ hmmm compost) , dismissing & starting again - & the results can be a very different from the normal (abstract/modern art maybe)? But if they count pickled shar...

Re: Early Autumn Bits and Bobs - 2016.

My experimental late sown broad beans have small beans on them, (goodness I'll be putting in the overwintering ones soon so that means nearly a year of beans), my late sown peas have some white dusting of mildew, but harvested a few & peas are fine inside, darn thing is also on my corn salad tho...

Re: Early Autumn Bits and Bobs - 2016.

I succession sow my Mooli for just that reason Primrose. They snap off quite easily when digging them up & they are too big. I judge them by whether they are trying to push out of the soil, too high out then they are perhaps too big, hard to get it right though! I use mine, grated into salads or...

Re: Last of the summer wine syndrome !

Same as you Primrose, it there is any new crop on that might just make it if we get an Indian Summer & a bit of green left in the plant I nurse them through, sometimes even give them a wee foliar feed if chances are good.

Re: Eating the foliage of vegetables

I was thinking of this when I was down at lottie today, so I did a few taste tests. Celeriac stems were just like mild celery, although not as crispy & even more fibrous, swede leaves were pretty bland but had a funny sweetness, kohl rabi leaves were quite nice, but the ones I tasted haven't sta...

Re: Rhubarb (in British climate)

My Rhubarb has already started to shut down for Winter. I doubt I even have 1 stem to take. If you have any to take Anthony then I would do so as your time frame is closing & once it makes it move it is quick. Call it an experiment to test out the taste & feed back for us. I took some stems ...

Re: Early Autumn Bits and Bobs - 2016.

Primrose they may surprise you. This happened to me coming from the vacant plot next door & I thought I'd leave them & see, & they survived. They were late and small when I took them finally about March / April I think, but mini veg is the rage & they tasted exceptionally sweet. They...

Re: Eating the foliage of vegetables

Good question Primrose.

I suspect there are lots of foliage that is edible. Thinking of microgreens you eat it all in these, so I suspect OK to eat the bigger ones as well, but probably need cooking. Looking forward to the responses.
