Courgette Flower Risotto

As reqested by Vicki. I had forgotten that courgettes were still attached to the flowers in this recipe, but hope it's still useful. It was a great success when I made it last year. This recipe was given to me by a friend who had cut it out of one of the weekend papers - Daily Telegraph, I think. Co...

Great, thanks GIB. What does 'Bar' refer to - density? I will discuss the options you have given, with OH. If you have a website, would you PM it to me please?

Vivie Veg, the stretch netting we buy comes in 4m widths too - the last one lot we bought was 4m x 10m.

Courgette Flower Risotto

Hello Vicki - last year I made Courgette Flower Risotto. Lovely! If it sounds like the kind of thing you are interested in, let me know and I will post under 'Recipes' for you.

I like the idea of red clogs! Do you know if they have good sole grip and what they are made from, Lakeview? I couldn't work it out from the website. The zippered low boots sound interesting too, Mr PH. Will have a look in our local garden centres. I also like the sound of your Millets cloggies, Jud...

Thanks for all your thoughts and tips. I will go ahead, dig the trench (didn't get it done before going away!) - will see what I think at season end. Might just give Red Trench a go next year on your recommendation, Allan. Angi, we grow celeriac too. I like to add celery to vegetable soup not only f...

Garden Hose Suppliers

I am looking for a supplier of good quality garden hose of long length, i.e. better quality and longer length than standard garden centre fare. We want to extend our current hose for greater reach. Resistance to kinking is very important. Any good commercial suppliers out there? Or any recommendatio...

Well, Piglet - since trying those Peppadews of yours, I have been to Tescos and bought the last two jars on the shelf. Hope you're not running low! Even better, OH is not that keen on them. Thanks for the chilli plants too!

Carole & Geoff - what is their flavour supposed to be like? If good, I would be interested in growing some next year too.

That's encouraging, Sally. We've just built a cane and stretch netting cage above 4 feet high, over our brassicas and have been debating whether it would stop butterflies or not. Or whether we should go for the finer mesh. If it works I would rather stick with the stretch netting, as we have found i...

We've found exactly the same. Plants seem to do better in the round terracotta-coloured pots, than the square black ones. I was responsible for the purchase of the square ones, as they fit better when stacked in trays, etc. OH has always maintained they are not as good. When he was a commercial grow...

Thanks Darrenc and Lakeview - very helpful. It is really only for soups we want it, but OH mentioned he thought the self-blanching one didn't last through frost... just the time we are making soups and would want it(?) Do you get decent size stalks from the self-blanching? And suckers? Better watch ...

Is Growing Celery Worthwhile?

Perhaps I should have asked this before we sowed the seed...I have just planted out our self-blanching celery (Greensleeves) and now have to start work on a trench for non self-blanching variety (Giant Pascal). It all seemed okay when I was reading about it, but now it needs doing before the weekend...

Angi - your photo wouldn't look out of place in a frame! A work of art. We haven't lifted our garlic yet (6 different varieties from IoW), but I hope it ends up looking as good as the above examples.

Thanks for your replies. I should have been clearer though. As Beccy mentioned, I want them for slipping on and off easily. So yes, for the garden. Weeding, etc. But also just to nip down and grab veg for dinner, etc. Dual purpose really. John, you have a point re the safety of my footwear. We don't...
