Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED
Did you get any of Dobies seed and if so how’s that doing compared with Irish Seed Savers. I don’t see any harm swapping seeds until the great god of Alliums takes us but you might have a bit of competition with the blokes round here.

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED
That’s what I was thinking. We might go down in history as the people that saved the name James Long Keeping.

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED
I’m getting a bit worried, there’s no sign of them. Everything else is coming up so I don’t think it’s me. I’ve one lot in a heated propagator and one lot in a covered seed tray both in an unheated green house. My own Bedfordshire Champion seedlings are now hardening off outside.

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED
Here we go then, mid ish March and the sap is rising. I sowed some of my own save Bedfordshire Champion seed a couple of weeks ago and it’s just started germinating so decided to have a go with the James Longkeeping. I’ve sown about half (116 ish) and will sow the other half next week, unless I chan...

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED
My Irish Seed Saver hunch may have been right, on ordering some the other day they had 40 odd packets in stock. Shall we meet back here at germination time to compare findings.

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED
My memory from looking for it on on the interweb is that it was a Mr James who bred the onion somewhere in London long ago built on sometime in the 1800’s. I’ve got hold of Seed and sets in the past and it’s a good doer, stores incredibly well and is a usable size, I don’t understand why it’s fallen...

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED
I was going to order from Irish Seed Savers, they’re still saying 11 packets left, but thinking about it I reckon they will be last years seed. So if I hang on a month or so and the number of packets left goes up, that’ll be when this years seed is ready.

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED
Best of luck with the Dobies, I think I’ll stand out in the sun for a while then order some from Irish Seed Savers.

Re: British Garden Centres
I couldn’t comment on prices because I’ve never found anything I want to buy at Hornsea garden centre. I don’t know how they get away with calling themselves a garden centre. However they are marvellous if you have an overwhelming need for a jigsaw puzzle, scented candle or a colouring book, or just...

Re: Onions.
I follow my spuds with onions and leeks having mucked heavily for the spuds. I sow saved seed (Bedfordshire Champion) individually in trays in the greenhouse in late February, I made a peg board affair to press into the compost to help evenly sow the seed. I transplant them into the allotment when t...

Re: JAMES LONG KEEPING ONION SEED
Hello do I get an award for digging up an old thread? Ive been trying to get hold of James Longkeeping onion seeds for a few years. I’ve had a couple of packets from Dobies but had zero germination, it wasn’t me, I had 100% germination with my own Bedfordshire Champion seed. I’ve also had other disa...
