Re: Early Spring Bits and Bobs

There is a fog free lens cleaner you can get from the optometrist - well not him specifically but from the shop. Someone also told me motor bike shops have a product as well used on helmet visors.

Re: Type of pot to use in greenhouse/conservatory

Black plastic pots will be OK but need to be deep as the deeper you plant the toms the more roots form so they are getting more nutrients & will be more prolific. Grow bags standing upright are good but ugly so perhaps you could make a frame to support them & also hide them & this would ...

Re: Saving Sweet Potato

Looking good giaur! My first one that was well too early but shooting did not make it, just rotted away. I currently have 1 in a glass with the toothpicks on the windowsill and it just has roots, then another on it's side in soil which is getting a bit of bottom warmth in the propagator, but it has ...

Re: Early Spring Bits and Bobs

Funny you say that Primrose. On Saturday right on the beach at the foot of Highcliffe Castle 2 men tried to entice 2 dogs aways from 2 different owners. The beach is full of dog walkers & joggers and the like so they had some bottle. Both owners coaxed their dogs back & reported it with iden...

Re: Pricking out vs sowing individually in pots

I suppose Primrose it can only be measured by your success & I do the same as you & (try) to sow one seed per pot which are little dinky things & then pot on as the roots fill the pot & the next & so on until the weather plays ball for final planting. Toms get planted on to below...

Re: Early Spring Bits and Bobs

It is definitely spring down here, got my first wee asparagus purple tip showing, but know more are not far away as soil disturbance around the established ones. Unfortunately I have to remember which to crop & which to take few & which to leave this year. The beast from the east took quite ...

Re: planting citrus

I was having a few problems with my lemon after potting it up & was directed to a FB site 'Growing citrus in containers'. quite a good site, world wide members growing interesting things & you get answers to any questions. Easy to join just have to tell them what citrus you are growing.

Re: What a grand day!

Deffo spring is having a big stretch & waking up! Exciting times - there will be failures & achievements ahead but as we moan we will learn & also challenge ourselves to repeat the achievements! Funny how we forget every year is different weather wise - but that perfect cauliflower or ca...

Re: Early Spring Bits and Bobs

Much improved weather coming up as wind has died down so just a fresh breeze with sunny intervals tomorrow. 99mph at the Needles last night which was a bit loud even here but no where near 99mph after crossing over to the mainland & diverted by 3 blocks of houses, but plenty of branches down at ...

Re: Early Spring Bits and Bobs

Well breezy south Dorset as well. Confident tunnel & shed will be OK, but might have an even bigger lean on the tall net cage which I already plan to move to beside the tunnel so more sheltered. I don't mind if it is flattened but hope all is intact as bought proper anchors & connectors read...

Re: Grafting tomato plants

I would agree with Primrose that this is a pretty good opportunity to continue the experiment as you already have enough tomatoes. Sow another couple of rootstock seeds & then when they are bigger match a tom in stem thickness? Also thinking these are delivered quite late (well mine were last ye...

Re: Goldfinch.

Worth a try I would say Primrose & maybe some artificial cover in around for them sneak out for food for the hatchlings if it is a bit exposed. Or give them the full des res & plant some rosemary under the fence as well so they have some cover & tips to take you have a lovely row of colo...

Re: Early Spring Bits and Bobs

Agree Primrose - the sun deceives & is not in total control just yet. And now if right on cue the gales & rain suddenly appear to flood & blow away the cute wee tomatoes in the cute green little plastic shelter! But those that get over this & try again will learn - a bit like the old...

Re: Help!!

Funnily I saw something just tonight about cutting a spud in half & dipping it in course salt to clear off after soaking. I only stopped at that pic btw as the picture was not clear & couldn't figure out what it was as supposed to be as it is a cooking site!
