I had a lovely tray of Cavelo Nero (Italian black cabbage) ready to plant out, but greenhouse being delivered today - all v. exciting, so left them on the grass for one night beforehand. All got eaten. Slugs must've had a party. Sickening innit? All that hard work, ruined in an instant. And the gree...

Mint roots in compost
Is it OK to use compost with lots of mint roots in it? I was going to top up some outside beds, but wondered if it was a bit like Couch grass or Bindweed in that does it sprout from every tiny rootlet????

I do suffer from acid reflux a lot!! It is made worse with bending down for weeding etc. I have invested in one of those posh kneeler thingies that can turn into a little stool or you can kneel on them, just to encourage me to not bed from the waist so much. I had some marvellous stuff from the dr,b...

My olive tree is in a pot, in a South facing position against a warm wall. I have had it for 3 years. I have it for curiosity, not olives, and don't expect to get any - any fruits will be an unexpected bonus. Having said that, my Greek neighbour grew two olives in his front garden, and I don't know ...

Thanks Compo - sound advice, as usual. I am beginning to wonder how much irrigation I would need as the soil seems so poor draining ... I'm spending a lot of effort trying to incorporate compost and manure to improve draining at the mo. We've not had rain all April really, and it's still really heav...

Irrigation system
I'm installing new raised beds, and would like to put in a controllable irrigation system - like a soaker hose or similar that would use the water butt on my greenhouse. Anyone else done this? What system do you use? Is one water butt enough? Can the system be extended to other areas of the garden a...

GW is filmed just outside Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire. I am about 17miles south of Stratford now, and our weather hasn't been as good as in the rest of the country - it was great last weekend, but this week, cloudy and foggy yesterday and today!! Not a lot of sunshine. I think they seem to be ...

Dug for an hour yesterday, and managed one spade's depth and about 5'!!! Got some muck and compost and am incorporating that. I am considering ordering some topsoil and muck to put in my raised beds. Looking around the area, there are plenty of people who are growing their own, so I know it's not imp...

Hooray! Have FINALLY moved house, into the Cotswolds, and have a garden again after 9 long months. AND have got the internet back after 5 long weeks!!!! Can't wait to get going on my veggie plot, but am shocked at how heavy the soil is here - could actually make pots, fire them and glaze them just f...

Bit of a sad weekend really for me, 'cos I had to clear all my stuff off the allotment as we're moving. The worst thing was, it was all under about a foot of water!! I couldn't believe it - I've NEVER seen it like that before. We were wading through right up to the tops of our wellies, trying to whe...

Unfortunately, I have had to give up my lottie as we are moving, but I was speaking to my successor today, who was anxious because the plot is completely waterlogged!! I have cultivated the plot for the last 4 years, and have never had it waterlogged before - so I would worry about starting anything...
