Re: Grafted tomatoes

Well - a bit more than a week later - our grafted tomatoes produced more fruit, earlier and bigger as they did last year. Having said that, this year's crop is poor overall, as are most of our fruit and veg.

We're planning on only growing grafted tomatoes next year, so we'll see how that works out!

Re: Happy Birthday Tigger.

Welsh water is always great Alan. Bala is one of our favourite places. It used to be our regular sailing and windsurfing haunt, but now it's walking and swimming for dogs. We don't have any children of our own Monika, although we often have other peoples'. We're substitute grandparents for many and ...

Re: new kitchen garden member needs advice

Welcome to the forum Dave. I would suggest you only do a small patch at a time, getting plenty of composted stuff/manure/straw into the soil to open it up. We don't dig, although we do occasionally rotovate. We use the deep bed method and just add compost and manure on our raised beds. We don't walk...

Re: Happy Birthday Tigger.

Thank you. We celebrated it yesterday because the weather was better - went to Llangollen for lunch, then on to Bala to walk the dogs and see how the puppy reacted to water (she's only been in our brook so far). They had a great time and the little one (she'll be 6 months old this week) discovered s...

Re: asparagus

We've got two established beds of about 8 by 8 crowns in each, plus another new bed the same size. Whilst we are only 2 folk and agree that we can easily tire of the new crop, it's a great product to give away. We don't undercrop but we do break the fern stems over at the height of summer to create ...

Re: How difficult is it to grow Celery?

We grow it every year. We thin it out as you would carrots and use the little stems in salads and soups. Then - as JB says - we get a bit more serious about excluding the light. We haven't had any real success with self blanching.

Re: Strange?

I'm with Chanters, we've had a dreadful year for garlic and onions. They look great but they're full of water and very little flavour. They won't keep so we're using them fresh.

Re: Breakfast: the most important meal of the day

I have a very large latte first thing, usually about 6.30am and eat my breakfast at work, sometime around 8am. Much to everyone's disgust, it's usually leftovers and always savoury (I don't like sweet breakfasts) - curry, chilli, fish pie, liver and onions, whatever. If there's no leftovers then I h...

Re: Dissapointing Patio Potatoes

The ones grown outside sit on a substantial layer of manure with a hefty sprinkling of chicken pellets. The tubs have some manure in the bottom and some pellets but we always add a liquid feed each week.

it's not scientific but it works!
