Re: Siskins

Thanks Monika, sadly this one is very dead, but we have had stunned birds fly off before. I keep things in the window now to try and stop the birds, but I guess this little one was just too new. :(

My very best wishes Mike, and do take rest seriously - it sounds like quite a heavy schedule you have there... Keep fighting.

Re: It's raining!

Dear NB, thank you for sending it our way - it is with us now :D . Hopefully it will stay a while and penetrate further than the top 2 mm of soil!

Re: Siskins

Hi JB, Glad to read you had a good holiday! Your sighting of the woodpecker family has just given me hope - I watched from an upstairs window this morning as an adult woodpecker was feeding its youngster from our peanut feeder. I was very upset this afternoon to discover the youngster has flown into...

Re: Personal peat vs peat-free experiment

My personal experiment has not been nearly as scientific as yours Alan, last year I grew Broad beans in Westlands MP, this year I used New Horizons. They seem to be growing just as well and look very healthy. As I say, in no way scientific - far to many variables, but as to my own satisfaction - I a...

Re: It's raining!

You are lucky NB, in our corner of West Sussex it has been spitting and spotting most of the day, but nothing that will do any good. :(

Re: Things ripening early

I know it is a national thing, but I can't get over the strawberries this year! I have been able to make about 3 lbs of jam already, and we have had plenty for eating and I really only have a few plants!

Re: Springtime bits and bobs

The power of this forum: I hope we get some rain at some point, but I don't think we have any on the horizon. It was raining this morning Ok, so it was feeble, and didn't make the slightest bit of difference but it was rain. Now, I hope I win the lottery, and we have a superb summer...

Re: Tweet for peat

One quote, no comment from me either: What strikes me is the thoughtful, considered and respectful way that a wide variety of people have joined in with what is a robust but healthy conversation. This is a great example of just how good a virtual conversation can be. From the Which Food taste test t...

Re: Springtime bits and bobs

Everything is dry as a bone here - glad the cold wind has dropped, but it is still not really warm unless you are directly in the sun. Too cold to have the doors open today I hope we get some rain at some point, but I don't think we have any on the horizon. I wrapped everything up last night as we w...

Re: Slug control

Before going away in early April I planted out some brassica seedlings and put a few organic pellets nearby to protect the seedlings. I was most perturbed to find a robin leaping down from the shrubs to carry off the pellets! I quickly dashed to get some environmesh to lay over everything to stop hi...
