Re: BACON

Eeek Dan Numbers!

I do love bacon, love the smell of it cooking, but a bacon candle is a step to far! I could imagine the candle going rancid as well if using real bacon fat.

Shall we go back to bacon butties, toasted bacon sarnies, the BLT, spaghetti carbonara?

Re: Stone shortage

Agree Pa! Damn stones do grow! They come in useful though as I collect them over the spring/summer after they've worked their way to the top over winter, (mostly thanks to Mr Mole)! I put them in buckets that have a wee hole or lost the handle & then in winter they hold my plastic down. Not that...

Re: % Failsafe

I used to do that but you can end up with a glut. What I do now is sow once, check success rate & if necessary sow again a bit later. They seem to catch up & if they don't it is a staggered crop. That plan did not work at all with the parsnips last year though - total zilch, which OH explain...

Funny Robo! :D :D

We could all do with a Gardener Fox that grows nice onions like those! I've seen clips on FB of foxes playing with children's toys left out in the garden & some walked away with them so that could be what yours are doing.

Re: Pots or beds?

I've had success with Peppers & Aubergines in the greenhouse. I grow them in canvas type big pots, some of them are tall and some are lower but wider. If it is very dull for days on end and towards the end of the season I put heavy duty aluminium foil behind them to reflect as much light as poss...

Re: Life on the allotment through photos

Talking about painting the shed - Mr Westi really surprised me today by creosoting the shed while I was at work! Chuffed to bits - but he may still end in the dog house if he has killed any of the plants planted near/on it! Hoping the smell of the stuff will dissuade the ?rats (big droppings so unli...

Re: Emergency planting

If you take the plastic off & let the weeds start growing & then put it on again, it will kill them off really quickly. The next lot of weeds will be slower up, so if you pop seedlings in there they will be above the weeds so it will be easier to hoe off the weeds without damaging the seedli...

Re: Emergency planting

What about putting down weed suppressant membrane and growing what you want to through holes punched into that in appropriate beds. If you mulch the cut out hole that will serve to stop the weeds under growing through & keep in moisture for the plants you put in. With this down over the Summer w...

Re: Welcome Spring, Bits and Bobs.

Well trip to Wilkinson's was lively & took longer as predicted. No 50p seeds, but plug plants were good value, got 6 healthy yellow chilli plants for £2 & only paid a £1 for what seeds I did get, also their grapes & berries looked pretty good. Chinese supermarket was closed until mid Apr...

Good One Pa!

Would have been fun if you had sent it to one (or all) of your plot holders about something, but judging by the average age on our plot you might have been hauled up to the judge for culpable homicide! :D

Re: Welcome Spring, Bits and Bobs.

Weekend's weather looking good down here - starting my to do list in anticipation! Quick nip into Wilkinson's tomorrow to top up on seeds, if anything left of course! I say quick but I haven't been to that shopping precinct since before Xmas so that my mean a wee bit longer than anticipated! They've...
